Honda NX500 Expert Review

The NX500 gets a redesigned headlamp and tail-light, and the fairing sits higher and appears wider than before. The new 5-inch TFT display is bright enough and legible on a sunny afternoon, while the buttons feel tactile and offer great feedback even with gloves on. One thing missing is a distance-to-empty readout, which feels like a sore miss on a motorcycle designed for touring.

The NX500 feels quite comfortable from the moment you get on it. Manoeuvring through traffic is easy, and the motorcycle smoothens out most bumps well at low speeds. Heat management is excellent, and even in scorching summer conditions the engine does a good job of keeping heat away from the rider. 

The 471cc parallel-twin has received some changes to improve low-end performance, but what stands out more is how relaxed the motorcycle feels to ride. The engine, gearbox and light clutch work together so well that even after spending around 100km in city traffic, it still leaves you feeling fresh. Honda also claims a 3kg weight reduction, although it is not something that is immediately noticeable from the saddle. 

On the road, the NX500 feels quite comfortable and smoothens out most bumps well at low speeds. Honda says the fork spring rate and damping have been fine-tuned, and the motorcycle feels relaxed and composed while riding. The additional front disc has improved braking performance, although the initial bite is still a little too soft. 

The NX500 gets a TFT display, traction control and dual front discs. The switchgear is easy to use and feels well finished, but switchable ABS is still not available.

The NX500 is an expensive bike, but it offers a much better package than the CB500X. Its real strength is not something that comes through on paper. The combination of comfort, a smooth engine, a light clutch and relaxed road manners makes it a genuine mile muncher. The expensive accessories are difficult to ignore, but if comfortable long-distance riding is the priority, the NX500 makes a strong case for itself.
