What Makes BMW Bikes Different: Technology and Safety Features

Boxer Twin Engines: BMW’s Signature Engine Design

Many BMW motorcycles are known for their horizontally opposed boxer twin engines. In this layout, the cylinders sit on either side of the engine. This helps keep the bike’s centre of gravity low which can make it feel more stable and balanced. The boxer engine also has a distinctive exhaust note and power delivery.

Telelever and Paralever Suspension: Better Stability and Control

BMW uses Telelever front suspension on several of its larger adventure and touring motorcycles. The system separates steering and suspension forces which helps reduce front end dive under hard braking. At the rear, the Paralever system works with the shaft drive to reduce the effect of drive forces on the suspension.

Shaft Drive: Less Maintenance Than a Chain

Several larger BMW touring and adventure motorcycles use shaft drive instead of a conventional chain. The enclosed system stays cleaner and does not need regular cleaning or chain lubrication. It can also offer a long service life when properly maintained.

BMW ShiftCam: Smoother Power Delivery

BMW’s ShiftCam technology is used on its larger boxer engines. It changes the valve timing and lift depending on engine speed and load. This helps the engine deliver stronger performance across the rev range while also improving refinement and efficiency.

ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control

BMW offers electronic safety systems such as ABS Pro and Dynamic Traction Control on several motorcycles. ABS Pro helps control braking when the bike is leaned over, while traction control helps prevent excessive rear wheel slip. These systems can provide added confidence when riding through corners or on low grip surfaces.

Electronic Suspension Adjustment

Electronic Suspension Adjustment (ESA) allows riders to change the suspension settings using electronic controls. Depending on the motorcycle, the system can adjust damping based on factors such as riding conditions, load and passenger weight. This makes it easier to set up the bike for different types of riding without manually adjusting the suspension.

BMW Motorrad competes with other premium and luxury motorcycle brands operating in India, including Ducati, Triumph, Harley-Davidson, Kawasaki, and KTM.

The BMW G 310 RR is the most affordable model in BMW's India lineup, priced from Rs 2.90 lakh (ex-showroom). It is followed by the F 450 GS, which starts at Rs 4.70 lakh.

BMW's electric two-wheeler range in India falls under its Urban Mobility category and currently includes the CE 02 and the CE 04.

BMW's Adventure category, built around the GS badge, includes the R 1300 GS, R 1300 GS Adventure, F 900 GS, F 900 GS Adventure, and F 450 GS. The R 1300 GS Adventure, with its larger fuel tank and long-travel suspension, is aimed at extended off-road and cross-country touring, while the F 450 GS serves as the more accessible, lighter option for riders newer to the GS range.

The M 1000 R is currently the most powerful bike in BMW's India lineup, with a 999cc inline four-cylinder engine and a top speed of 280 kmph. The S 1000 RR, also powered by a 999cc inline-four, is close behind with a top speed of 303 kmph.

I currently own a Himalayan 450 and am looking to upgrade to a twin-cylinder ADV with a refined engine and good electronics. I mainly use the bike for long rides and highway touring and am not particularly interested in off-roading. My budget is up to Rs 8 lakh. Could you suggest some good ADV options that would suit my requirements?

The BMW F 450 GS is the only twin-cylinder adventure motorcycle that fits in your budget, while the Honda NX500 E-Clutch is another option you can check out. That said, both these motorcycles are not a significant upgrade over your Himalayan 450 in terms of performance and the on-road price of the NX500 E-Clutch stretches over your Rs 8 lakh budget. We suggest you wait until the new Royal Enfield Himalayan 750 and the Norton Atlas GT will be available in the Indian market. Take a test ride of both these motorcycles and pick which one suits you best.

Hi, I’m looking to buy a premium bike and am considering the BMW F 450 GS. I really like the Racing Blue colour, but I’m not sure about the ERC system. I’ll be riding 90%+ in the city, mainly in Mumbai’s bumper-to-bumper traffic, with occasional weekend rides to places around the city and nearby outskirts. Will the ERC function properly in heavy city traffic, or could the ERC clutch system cause any issues in such riding conditions? Would it be better to consider the Exclusive variant instead? I currently ride a 2016 Thunderbird 350.

Since most of your riding is going to be in gridlocked Mumbai traffic, the Trophy variant of the BMW F 450 GS with the centrifugal clutch is the one that makes the most sense. Yes, there will be a small adaptation window, but once you get used to the clutch, it is a very handy feature to have - not having to use the clutch lever in traffic is a boon! To be sure, take a test ride before you make your decision.

Hi I’m a beginner rider and I’m a bit lean and 5’7 height but I want a good sports bike and my first choice is the bmw G rr310 simply because it is more attractive in colours than the TVS Apache even though the Apache has better features and quick shifter too at a lower on road price. I have had other preferences as well like the duke 250 which I didn’t like that much in terms of looks triumph speed had recent issues with bike that puts a question on the reliability of the bike and I feel Aprilia rs457 and duke 390 are way too overwhelming and powerful for me as my first bike especially in Indian roads with high traffic pls help me decide the perfect bike overall

I own a Hunter 350 Dapper White for over two years. Lately, the suspension has started to bother me, and I am considering upgrading to an adventure bike. Which model would you recommend within a budget of Rs. 7 lakh? If there is an upcoming motorcycle that is worth waiting for, I am also considering upgrading the suspension on my Hunter 350 in the meantime. I was particularly interested in the Honda NX500, but the latest version seems significantly more expensive. What would you suggest?

Since you're innately familiar with Royal Enfield ownership, upgrading to the Himalayan 450 seems like a safe bet. The Himalayan's suspension can iron out pretty much any road imperfection you encounter and its performance will be a big step up over the Hunter you own too. The only caveat with going for the Himalayan is that it is a tall and heavy bike, and these attributes will make their presence felt at slower speeds inside the city. If you want slightly higher performance levels on a lighter machine, then the KTM 390 Adventure models (whether you opt for 350cc or 399cc iterations is up to the budget you have) are worth considering. The KTM bikes have great handling, punchy top-end performance and come with features like adjustable suspension, traction control and a bidirectional quick shifter - depending on the variant. In your Rs. 7 lakh budget, you can also get the BMW F 450 GS, although depending on your city's taxation structure, you may need to stretch your budget a little if you are eyeing the top Trophy variant. The new entry-level GS is a competent machine and will be a step up in refinement from the single-cylinder machines mentioned above and it is also lighter than them. You will, however, need to be prepared for higher running and maintenance costs expected of a machine wearing the BMW badge. Take test rides of these machines to decide which one works best for you before you make your next purchase. If none of these options seem enticing, you could also retrofit the latest-gen Hunter's suspension to your older model which will bring some much needed relief in terms of ride quality. Do bear in mind that this swap will likely void your warranty and we'd recommend reaching out to your nearest dealership for more clarity on the same.

I am planning to buy a sub-twin-cylinder motorcycle under 500cc and was really looking forward to the BMW F 450 GS Trophy version. However, it appears to be overpriced, and even the spoke wheels are optional. Should I wait for the Aprilia Tuareg 457, or are there any other alternatives that are expected to be launched this year or in early 2027?

Sadly, in India, if you're looking for a decently priced sub-500cc, twin-cylinder adventure bike, then you'll have to extend your wait as there's nothing currently or on the horizon either. The BMW F 450 GS is, all things said and done, the somewhat palatable option because the Honda NX500 - as accomplished a bike as it is - simply cannot justify its steep Rs 7.44 lakh ex-showroom asking price, even with its super convenient and non-intrusive E-Clutch technology. We'd advise you to also take a look at the mid-spec Exclusive variant of the 450 GS because that has pretty much every option that you'd need and want ticked without the centrifugal clutch seen on the top Trophy model. Its also a good chunk more affordable to buy. If you're okay with making your peace with the alloy wheels, then you also save the moolah that BMW wants you to shell out for the pretty - but pricey - cross-spoke wheels. Unless you're a hardcore off-road rider, these spoked wheels bring no functional improvement and sticking with the alloys is the sensible bet. You could also purchase them a little later on, if your heart is really set on them. Coming to the Aprilia Tuareg 457, there’s no clear India launch or even global reveal timeline yet.
