Yamaha had earlier unveiled the EC-06 at an event in Mumbai. Now, the Japanese brand has launched it at a price of Rs 1.68 lakh (ex-showroom, Maharashtra). Currently, this model is only available in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. It is the first EV offering from the Japanese marque in India.

EC-06 is based on River Indie
It comes with the same 4kWh battery pack as the Indie
Early last year, we exclusively reported that Yamaha is working with the Bengaluru-based startup River to co-develop its version of the Indie. Subsequently, Yamaha unveiled the EC-06 late last year.
The EC-06 has a 4kWh battery pack mated to a motor that produces 6.7kW of power – identical to the Indie’s setup. It has a claimed top speed of 79kph, lower than the River Indie by 11kph.
The EC-06’s chassis is also very similar to that of the Indie, as is its feature set, which comprises a colour LCD, three riding modes and reverse assist. Notably, the LCD layout on the EC-06 is like that on the earlier River Indie; the Gen 2.5 launched last year gets a new layout.
The EC-06 has an IDC-rated range of 169km – 6km higher than the River Indie’s. Yamaha claims a 0-80 percent charge time of 8 hours, which is similar to the River Indie when charged with the slower 480W charger. Notably, the Indie also has an option of a faster 750W charger, but the EC-06 doesn’t.
The Indie’s USP is the sheer amount of space it has to offer – a 43-litre boot along with 12 litres of storage in the front apron. In comparison, the EC-06 gets sleeker panels and a lower underseat storage of 24.5 litres with an open cubby on the front apron. This has likely contributed to its weight savings of 3kg compared to the Indie, as it tips the scales at 132kg.
The EC-06 also has different styling, with a sleeker and sharper design compared to the Indie’s more boxy and utilitarian looks. Notably, the headlight and tail-light on the EC-06 look more conventional than the Indie’s.
At Rs 1.68 lakh, the EC-06 costs Rs 22,000 more than the River Indie on which it is based. Currently, the EC-06 is only available in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. While the EC-06 wears a Yamaha badge, it will be manufactured entirely at River's factory in Hoskote, Karnataka.
