In what is becoming the overarching theme of the 2025 MotoGP season so far, Marc Marquez won both the Sprint and full-length races at Assen to extend his championship lead. It was a strong weekend for Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi as well, who finished on the podium in both races. Francesco Bagnaia, who has been unable to find his rhythm with the GP25, had a strong race and finished in third place.

  1. With 68 wins, Marquez equals Agostini’s all-time win record
  2. Alex Marquez crashes out of main race, second in the Sprint
  3. Bezzecchi top non-Ducati rider in the standings now

Marc Marquez equals Giacomo Agostini’s all-time MotoGP win record

Marquez had to contend with the fast-charging Bezzecchi in the main race.

Marquez’s win at the 2025 Dutch TT was his 68th Grand Prix victory, which has now put him on level footing with MotoGP legend Giacomo Agostini, and he now holds the second place in terms of wins. Valentino Rossi, with 89 victories, holds the all-time record for MotoGP wins and with his current form, Marquez looks to be on course to (at least) equal that number in the coming season.

While Marquez won both the races this weekend, he wasn’t always the fastest rider on track; in fact, pole position belonged to Yamaha’s star performer, Fabio Quartararo. However, Marquez ensured that once he took the lead in both races, no one was able to show him his rear wheel. In the main race, Marco Bezzecchi was able to come within striking distance of the Spaniard, but he ultimately couldn't overtake him and had to settle for second place.

Alex Marquez injured in crash tussling with Pedro Acosta

Alex has fractured his left hand in this crash.

For much of this season, Alex Marquez has played second fiddle to his brother, on track and in terms of the Championship. While it might seem like this is a derisive statement, the younger Marquez brother’s sheer consistency has allowed him to outperform all but one rider on the grid – no mean feat in 2025. While Alex did finish second in the Sprint race, he was engaged in a battle for P5 with KTM’s Pedro Acosta, and unfortunately, in this heated melee, Alex locked his front wheel and fractured his left hand in the process.

2025 MotoGP standings

Marc has a big 68-point advantage over the next rider.

With his victories this weekend and Alex’s crash in the main race, Marc Marquez’s championship lead over his brother has now extended to a significant 68 points. Alex Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia have held on to their second and third ranks, respectively, in the standings. Of late, Aprilia’s Marco Bezzecchi has been enjoying a strong turn of results and is now placed sixth in the standings, making him the top non-Ducati rider on the grid in terms of championship points.
