Bajaj recently launched the entire Triumph range with a ‘new’ downsized 349cc engine that allows it to sit in the lower 18 percent tax bracket as opposed to the earlier 40 percent that it attracted. The Dominar 400 has gone down a similar route and has been launched at Rs 2.04 lakh, marking a price reduction of Rs 37,000.
1. Bajaj Dominar 400's price cut by Rs 37,000
2. 349cc engine produces 40hp and 33.2Nm
3. Peak torque is down by 1.8Nm
Bajaj Dominar 400: What’s new?
The Dominar 400 costs Rs 26,000 more than the Dominar 250
So far, we know that Bajaj has achieved this downsized 349cc motor by keeping the bore intact and shortening the stroke of the erstwhile engine that breached the 350cc displacement. In the Triumph’s case, this change has resulted in a slight peak power drop, but the torque loss is relatively higher. In the Dominar 400’s case, the peak power remains the same, but the torque has gone down.
The downsized 349cc single-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine now produces 40.6hp at 9,000rpm and 33.2Nm at 7,500rpm, mated to a six-speed gearbox. This marks a drop of 1.8Nm in peak torque and a bump of 0.6hp in peak power. Peak power is produced 200rpm higher, and peak torque is delivered 1,000rpm later in the rev range.
For reference, the outgoing Dominar 400 was powered by a KTM-derived 373cc engine that produced 40hp at 8,800rpm and 35Nm at 6,500rpm. In this transition, the Dominar 400 has also lost a few kilos – 3kgs to be precise – and now tips the scales at 190kg (kerb).
Much like the Triumph’s, the engines have been downsized, but the nomenclature hasn’t changed. Apart from the engine, the bike remains identical to the outgoing model and continues to be offered in two colours – green and black. Even the feature set and touring-focused accessories continue to be part of the package.
Launched at Rs 2.04 lakh, it marks a substantial difference of Rs 37,000 compared to the outgoing model that was priced at Rs 2.40 lakh. At its current price, the Dominar 400 is Rs 26,000 dearer than the Dominar 250. With the Dominar 400 getting this downsized engine, we also expect Bajaj to launch the NS400Z with this engine soon.
