MG Majestor vs Gloster: Differences and similarities explained

MG has unveiled the Majestor as its new flagship SUV. Based on the Gloster, it features a revised exterior, an updated cabin layout and additional premium features, though it retains the same 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine. The Majestor will be positioned above the Gloster as a more premium offering. We take a closer look at how it compares to the Gloster by highlighting both their key differences and similarities.

Majestor’s front end gets a major redesign

Compared to the Gloster, the Majestor gets a more rugged-looking front end. It features a split headlamp design with LED daytime running lamps (DRLs) and vertically stacked LED headlamps mounted on the sides of the bumper, in contrast to the Gloster’s conventional and urbane looks. Vertical DRLs are also integrated within the Majestor’s grille, which is studded with rectangular elements and chrome accents. Lower down, the front bumper gets thick cladding details. While the Gloster had a lot of chrome elements at the front, the Majestor gets blacked-out detailing for the most part.

The side profile remains largely similar to the Gloster’s, but the Majestor gains a new design for its 19-inch alloy wheels and black treatment for the wheel arches and side sills.

At the rear, the redesigned LED tail-lamps now feature a connected light bar, the MG logo is replaced by ‘Morris Garages’ lettering, and the rear bumper receives additional cladding. Additionally, the Majestor features dual-tipped exhausts instead of a quad-tipped. Dimension-wise, the Majestor is over 5 metres long and slightly larger than the Gloster in width and height, though it has an identical wheelbase.

New layout and features on-board the Majestor

The Majestor’s overall cabin layout is quite different from the Gloster’s. The newly designed interior adopts a single-tone black theme with silver accents in comparison to the black and brown theme on the Gloster. New additions include an updated 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a fully digital 12.3-inch instrument cluster. A-pillar-mounted and centre console-mounted grab handles are also present. The gear lever, earlier mounted on the centre console, has now moved to the steering column. The Majestor also has the 6- and 7-seater layout options as the Gloster.

New feature additions to the MG Majestor include heating and massaging functions for the powered and ventilated front seats, a 12-speaker JBL audio system and two wireless phone charging pads, as well as advanced off-roading hardware comprising a low-range transfer case, crawl mode and differential locking at the front, rear and centre.

MG Majestor vs Gloster: Powertrain

Both are powered by the same 2.2-litre twin-turbo diesel engine

The Majestor carries over the 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine from the Gloster, but it is in a higher state of tune. The unit produces 215hp and 478Nm of torque, mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. It is available in 4x2 and 4x4 drive layouts. The Gloster’s lower variants, however, are also offered with the option of a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel delivering 161hp and 374Nm of torque.

Bookings for the Majestor have commenced for Rs 41,000, and the SUV’s prices will be revealed in April. Deliveries are set to begin in May.
