High-security registration plate (HSRP): Benefits, price and application process

High-security registration plates (HSRPs) are mandatory for all vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 2019, to help curb vehicle theft and make stolen vehicles easier to track. Owners of vehicles bought before this date also need to replace their existing number plates with HSRPs. But what are HSRPs, why are they required and how can you apply for one? Read on to find out.

What is HSRP?

High-security registration plate (HSRP): Benefits, price and application process

An HSRP is part of a uniform pattern of displaying your vehicle's registration number. They are made of solid aluminium, and feature reflective sheeting marked with 'IND', and a chromium-based 'Chakra' hologram applied through hot stamping. Each plate also carries a permanent identification number of at least 10 digits, preceded by two alphabets (laser-branded on the bottom-left corner). The registration number is embossed on the plate and hot-stamped using black foil with the 'INDIA' inscription.

Different colours depending on vehicle category

The colour combination of HSRPs varies depending on the vehicle category. Private vehicles have black alphanumeric characters on a white background, while commercial vehicles use black characters on a yellow background. Private electric vehicles have white characters on a green background, while commercial vehicles have yellow characters on a green background. Combustion-run cabs have yellow characters on a black background, while electric cabs use black characters on a green background.

HSRP benefits

Standardised and easily readable fonts

Earlier, vehicle owners could choose different fonts and styles for their number plates, which sometimes made registration numbers difficult to read. HSRPs follow a standard format for letters and numbers, making them easier for traffic police and other authorities to identify and look for RTO details, even when vehicles are moving.

Installation via authorised dealers

HSRPs can be obtained only through vendors approved by the respective state authorities. During the application process, vehicle owners must share details such as the registration, chassis and engine numbers. This ensures that each plate is linked to a specific vehicle.

Harder to remove or tamper with

Traditional number plates could be easily removed, replaced or altered, making it easier for thieves to use fake plates on stolen vehicles. HSRPs address this issue by using special locks that cannot be reused or removed easily. This makes number plate tampering more difficult and helps authorities trace stolen vehicles.

Better vehicle records

The HSRP system also helps authorities maintain a central database of vehicle details, including registration, chassis and engine numbers. This makes it easier to access vehicle information and trace a vehicle when required.

Is there HSRP colour-coded sticker?

A registration plate in form of a sticker is pasted on the windshield of the vehicle. The colour of the sticker differs by the powertrain and type of vehicles. They have details such as the name of the registering authority, the vehicle’s registration number, its laser-branded permanent identification number and the date of its first registration. These also aid traffic officers to enforce laws around fuel emissions.

What is the price for HSRP?

HSRP prices vary by region. The table below lists the prices for different vehicle categories in Maharashtra for reference.
