Same platforms, same engines and similar pricing. But which one offers more bang for the buck, the Kushaq or the Taigun?

First launched in 2021, the Kushaq and Taigun were fielded as Skoda’s and Volkswagen’s midsize SUV contenders. For MY26, both models have been refreshed with new styling elements, additional features and a new gearbox option. Both sit on the MQB-A0-IN platform, pack the same engines and are known for their fun-to-drive character. But in top-spec guise, which of the two offers better value? We compare the Kushaq’s Prestige trim to the Taigun’s GT Plus trim to find out.

Powering the Kushaq and Taigun top trims is a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine, developing 150hp and 250Nm of torque, mated to a 7-speed DCT gearbox. Notably, it’s the only engine in its class with cylinder deactivation tech, wherein the unit operates on only two of the four cylinders at low speeds to save fuel. But the Taigun’s ARAI-claimed figures are marginally higher than the Kushaq’s.

Starting with lighting, while LED setups are common on both, there are some differences. The Skoda gets segmented LED DRLs at the front and illuminated branding at the back, whereas the Taigun features illuminated VW logos at the front and back and additionally offers welcome and goodbye lighting animations. However, the Kushaq offers the advantage of front fog lamps. As for colour options, while monotone shades are standard on both SUVs, the Taigun offers a matte finish, too, and dual-tone colours are available only on the Kushaq’s Monte Carlo edition, which gets cosmetic upgrades over the Prestige trim.

Both the Kushaq and Taigun are neck and neck when it comes to features. MY26 updates to both SUVs added a panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch digital driver’s display and a more powerful AC. However, the Kushaq gets a massage function for the rear seats, which the Taigun misses out on, and offers two more speakers with its audio system.

As for pricing, the Volkswagen Taigun’s top-spec version costs Rs 20,000 more than the fully loaded Kushaq. When it comes to choosing between the two models, styling is a factor, as looks are subjective, and both SUVs are similar underneath. Still, between the two, we’d pick the Skoda since it offers more value. It does everything that the Taigun can at a slightly more affordable price point. Additionally, it offers front fog lamps and a rear-seat massager, both of which enhance practicality.

All prices are ex-showroom, India.
