I am in the market for an EV. I am confused between the Harrier EV Fearless Plus 2WD 65kWh and the Sierra EV Adventure 2WD 63kWh. The price of both cars is the same due to discounts on the Harrier. My running is within the city, with occasional highway trips, and my annual running is about 15,000-20,000km. Rear seat comfort and overall comfort are important. Which car makes more sense?

Go for the Tata Sierra EV Adventure 2WD 63kWh. Your usage is city-heavy with occasional highway runs, and rear seat comfort is a priority. The Sierra EV is the better fit here. Though it is the smaller SUV overall, it has a rear seat that's as spacious and comfortable if not more than the Harrier's. The Harrier EV Fearless Plus 2WD 65kWh is a good car, but it is a larger, heavier SUV whose added size will give you no great advantage. The Sierra EV is also more efficient in city driving and easier to manoeuvre, while still offering enough range for your occasional highway trips.

Since both cars are priced similarly due to discounts, the Sierra EV is the more sensible choice for your usage pattern and comfort requirements. Do note, however, that with over 1,500km of use per month, an electric car will require frequent charging, so make sure you have home charging in place, and also note that frequent charging will take its toll on battery health sooner.

Hi Autocar team, I'm buying my first luxury sedan and have shortlisted the newly launched Lexus ES350h, BMW 530Li LWB and Mercedes E-Class LWB. I plan to keep the car for 10-12 years, so reliability, comfort, refinement and low ownership costs matter more to me than outright performance. If all three had the same badge, I'd choose the Lexus. However, the BMW and especially the Mercedes have much stronger brand recognition in India, and my family feels that matters at this price point. The Mercedes is also around 20 lakh more expensive than the Lexus on-road. Given my priorities, would you still recommend the Lexus, or do the BMW/Mercedes offer enough additional ownership satisfaction over the long term to justify the higher price?

Given your priorities of long-term ownership, reliability, comfort and low running costs, the Lexus ES Hybrid 350h is the most sensible choice. The hybrid powertrain is refined, efficient and well-proven, and Lexus has a strong reputation for reliability and low ownership costs over a 10-12 year period. The new-generation ES that's just been launched is also a genuinely comfortable and luxurious car, with a focus on refinement and rear-seat comfort that suits your usage perfectly.The BMW 530Li LWB and Mercedes E-Class are both excellent cars, and the Mercedes in particular has the strongest brand pull in India. However, as you've pointed out, the E-Class is significantly more expensive than the well-priced Lexus. Similarly, the BMW 530Li LWB is priced higher and offers a more engaging driving experience, but that does not seem to be your primary requirement.If you are genuinely happy with the Lexus as a product, we would not let brand perception override that decision. The ES 350h is a genuinely premium car, and over a decade of ownership, the satisfaction of a reliable, comfortable and refined car will matter far more than the badge on the bonnet.

Hi everyone, I'm planning to buy my first car and would really appreciate your suggestions. My priorities are safety (top priority), good-looking design, decent mileage and automatic transmission. I drive around 1,000 km per month and this will be my first car. I plan to keep it for at least 5 years and I am currently considering Maruti Suzuki Brezza (2026), Tata Nexon and Mahindra XUV 3XO. If you have owned or driven any of these, I would love to hear about your real-world experience regarding reliability, service and maintenance costs, automatic gearbox performance, mileage and comfort for city and highway driving. I am also curious about long-term ownership experience. Which one would you recommend, and why? Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Out of the options you've listed, the Nexon 1.2 Turbo DCA and XUV 3XO Turbo AT deliver better value than the Brezza, as far as equipment and performance go. Out of these, the Mahindra XUV 3XO is a solid choice for its smoother, stronger engine and its seamless 6-speed torque converter (automatic). Cabin space is very good, and it drives like a more expensive car, giving you a confident experience be it in the city or out on the highway. Before going ahead, do keep in mind that the XUV's boot is a bit small, fuel efficiency might not be as good as the Brezza's, and Mahindra's service network isn't as widespread as Maruti's. However, on the whole, the XUV feels is a good option, and one that we'd recommend.

I have almost finalised buying either the Toyota Hyryder Mild Hybrid S MT or the Toyota Taisor G Turbo MT. Please recommend which one is the better choice.

Go for the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder mild hybrid S MT. The Hyryder is the more complete and well-rounded car here. The mild hybrid system gives you a efficiency advantage in city driving, and the car itself is larger, more spacious and more comfortable for family use. The 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine is also reliable and smoother in everyday driving, which makes it easier to live with over the long term. The Taisor G Turbo MT is the more fun-to-drive option with its 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine, but it is a smaller car overall and does not offer the same level of space or comfort. Overall, the Hyryder mild hybrid S MT is the better all-rounder and the car that will make you happier over the long term.

Go for the Toyota Innova Crysta. Your usage is highway-heavy with occasional city runs, and you want a proper 7-seater with good luggage space and a premium feel. The Crysta is still the benchmark for this kind of requirement. It is genuinely spacious in all three rows, has a large and usable boot even with all seats up, and is built for long-distance comfort and reliability. The diesel engine is strong, refined and well-suited to highway cruising, and Toyota’s ownership experience and long-term reliability are hard to beat. The Mahindra XUV 7XO is the more modern product with a more premium-looking interior and a better sound system, but it does not match the Crysta for outright space, practicality or long-term peace of mind. If your priority is a proper 7-seater that will serve you well for years, the Crysta is the safer and more sensible choice. If you want a more premium cabin and a richer feature set, the XUV 7XO is the alternative, but it is not as practical as the Crysta.

I am looking to upgrade from my Hyundai Creta to a 7-seater SUV. My annual running is only around 6,000 km, and my budget is up to Rs. 25 lakh. Is the Hyundai Alcazar a good option for my usage? I have also considered the Mahindra XUV 7XO and Tata Safari, but I am concerned about their relatively low fuel efficiency. Which 7-seater SUV would you recommend?

With a yearly running of just 6,000km, petrol is the sensible choice, and the Hyundai Alcazar is a good option. It is a comfortable, easy-to-drive family SUV with a hassle-free ownership experience, and the 1.5 turbo petrol engine paired with the 7-speed dual-clutch automatic is powerful enough and relatively efficient too. Plus, since you're coming from a Creta, you'll be familiar with the Hyundai network and could even ask for a loyalty discount. However, the Alcazar’s third row is not as spacious as some larger cars in the segment, so if you genuinely need a proper 7-seater, it may not be the ideal solution. What's more, if your Creta is the 2020 or newer model, you'll find the Alcazar perhaps a little too familiar on the inside.The Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and MG Hector Plus are good options that offer more space. However, as you have noted, they're not fuel efficient at all, and moreover, in your budget, you will only get a low to mid-spec variant, whereas you will get a fully-loaded Alcazar. Another option to consider, though not an SUV, is the Kia Carens Clavis. Its MPV shape is more space-efficient, and you actually get more passenger and luggage room than the Alcazar, with the same efficient engines, for around the same price.

Hi, I am a teacher and a first-time female driver with a budget of Rs. 11.5 lakh. I am looking for an automatic car that I plan to keep for the next 15 years, but I am confused about whether to buy a petrol AMT, CNG AMT, or an EV due to the uncertainty surrounding ethanol blending. My daily commute is 46 km, of which 22 km is on the highway, 18 km is on normal roads, and 6 km is on bumpy village roads in poor condition. Please recommend the most suitable fuel type that will keep my overall cost of ownership low.

We'd recommend a petrol automatic. With a daily running of around 46km and an ownership period of 15 years, it offers the best balance of low ownership costs, reliability and ease of use for a first-time driver.We wouldn't let E20 fuel influence your decision. Modern E20-compliant petrol cars are designed to run on it, and there is no official roadmap beyond E20. It isn't a reason to avoid buying a petrol car today. A CNG automatic will certainly reduce your fuel bills, but the higher purchase price, reduced boot space and limited automatic options make CNG car less attractive unless fuel savings are your overriding priority. An electric car will have the lowest running costs, but at your budget, you'll have to compromise on size or features, and recovering the higher upfront cost will take time.Given your budget and usage, we'd look at the Maruti Suzuki Brezza facelift automatic which will launch soon if you can stretch slightly, or the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta+ AGS if you want to stay within budget. Both are easy to drive, have good ground clearance for the 6km of rough village roads and come backed by Maruti Suzuki's extensive service network. If you prefer a smoother automatic, the Hyundai Exter SX AMT is also worth considering.
