Now a days there are three types of engine cars. Petrol/Diesel, Hybrid and EV. Which is reliable and give long life services and what is the hybrid battery life and EV battery life.

Asked by: K V Sivaji

These days, cars are built to be very reliable irrespective of the powertrain and reliability also varies from manufacturer to model wise too. Speaking generally, a modern diesel engine is very reliable, however its long term future is uncertain with all the negativity around the fuel and its environmental impact. EVs are also reliable given that there are far fewer moving parts, battery life too is long and most brands now offer warranties in excess of 7 years to even lifetime (15 years) warranty.

However in the long run an EVs resale value is yet unknown. Thus looking at reliability, and a long term service life a petrol is a safe bet. The engine is reliable and easy to service with much less complexity than a hybrid.

Dear sir/ madam I have 22 lacs budget which can be stretched up to 23.5 lacs. I am quite confused between choosing Tata Sierra Adventure Plus AT or Accomplished AT? Which one is a value for money variant? Moreover, I have fuel concerns. Should I choose Petrol or Diesel Automatic? Is the newly launched Kia Seltos Upgrade a better option than Tata Sierra? What do the experts suggest?

The choice between a diesel and a petrol really comes down to how much you drive and how long you intend to keep the car. If you drive a lot and will put many miles on your car then a diesel makes sense as only then would you recover the extra initial investment. Between the Kia Seltos and the Tata Sierra it really comes down to your specific requirements which we don't have. However if you are going for a diesel, the Kia would be better as the diesel engine is more refined and delivers a strong performance too. If it is petrol you are looking at then you can consider the Sierra but the turbo direct injection engine only. The naturally aspirated unit is under powered and lacks a lot in performance.

Hi Team, I’m looking for a car with a budget of approximately ₹14 lakh on road. I will be commuting to the office daily in heavy, stop-and-go traffic and want an automatic car. My priorities are: Automatic transmission Maximum safety Comfortable rear seating 360° camera (useful in traffic) Low maintenance I’m seriously considering the Nexon Creative DSA, but I’m concerned about poor service quality and have heard that repairs can be expensive. Am I overthinking this — should I go for it, or should I consider other options in this price range?

Looking at your requirements we would recommend the Skoda Kylaq. The automatic transmission is a torque convertor unit which is smoother than a dual clutch autobox (which is what the Tata Nexon has). You will appreciate this since you drive daily in heavy stop-go traffic. The Kylaq is also very safe with many safety features and it secured a 5-star rating in the BNCAP tests. Skoda dealers do not have a legacy of great service however Skoda has made significant improvements in service standards.

Hello I have been driving the Mercedes C Class W204 facelift Avantgarde now for 13 years. Bought and maintained by the dealer till date. The car is in great condition. I have decided to buy a SUV. I turn 60 this March and plan to gift myself. The intent is to have comfort and long drives which I love and do a lot. The advice I seek is as follows I have undergone a bypass surgery 3 months ago hence is a SUV better than asedan for long drives? I have shortlisted the following SUVs - Mercedes GLC 300, Audi Q5 and the Volvo XC60. I like the Volvo the most. It is classy, understated, not too much in the face tech like the MB and rides very well. What would you advice I buy for comfort, long distance/highway, cost of ownership. Appreciate your help. Subramani

Happy birthday! And if you like the Volvo XC60, we recommend you go for it. It is, as you said, the most understated of the lot, and a less common sight on our roads, which makes it a little bit more special. Both the interior and exterior design aren't too over the top, and with the recent update in August 2025, its tech is now on par with the rest too. An underrated feature is the 1,410W Bowers & Wilkins audio system, which is possibly the best you'll find in this segment. It's an excellent highway cruiser with superb refinement at speed, and though not the most exciting to drive, it is very relaxing. Cost of ownership is on par with Mercedes GLC 300 and the Audi Q5, the only caveat being a slightly smaller service network, although Volvo is present in most big cities. For a heart patient, more so than the body style, its a safe, smooth, comfortable and predictable driving experience that is beneficial, and with its refined and relaxed demeanour, the Volvo XC60 should be ideal for you.
