I have been using a Hyundai Creta Diesel since 2017 and have driven it for almost 2 lakh km. I am now planning to upgrade my vehicle. Would the Mahindra XUV 7X0 base diesel variant be a good choice for my requirements?

Yes, the XUV 7XO base diesel is a solid upgrade from your 2017 Creta if you do long highway runs. The 2.2 diesel pulls stronger, sits at cruise with less effort, and the bigger, heavier Mahindra car feels more settled at speed and over broken roads. You also get a roomier cabin and boot, which helps on long trips with family and luggage.

Be ready for a few compromises. It is a big SUV, so parking in tight city spots takes getting used to, and the diesel manual’s clutch can feel heavier than your Creta’s in traffic. Expect slightly lower kpl than your old 1.6 diesel.

Overall, the XUV 7XO AX is a strong choice.

I am looking to buy an SUV under Rs 25 lakh with good comfort, a powerful engine, plenty of features and strong road presence. I do not like the look of the Mahindra XUV 7XO or Scorpio N. I am currently leaning towards the Thar Roxx. Are there any better options? I am open to EVs as well.

The Thar Roxx is a good choice if you are prioritising road presence. It has strong engines, good performance and is well equipped. It is also reasonably comfortable for a ladder-frame SUV. However, it cannot match the XUV 7XO in terms of passenger comfort and ride quality.Alternatively, you could consider the Tata Safari or the Harrier if you do not need seven seats. They ride well on bad roads, have comfortable cabins, and offer the broad-shouldered stance you are after. The 2.0-litre diesel has strong torque for quick highway overtakes and hill driving, and the automatic makes traffic easy to deal with.The Thar Roxx looks great and is brilliant off-road, but in daily use, the ride is busier, the rear seat is tighter, and the boot is smaller.If you want a petrol SUV with a more tech-heavy feel, the Kia Seltos 1.5 turbo-petrol automatic is also a solid choice within your budget, but it will not have the same road presence as the Harrier or the Roxx.

Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7L Diesel AT or XUV 7XO AX7L Diesel AT AWD for the next 10 years? My usage will be 70% city and 30% highway driving, including trips to hilly regions such as Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Pick the Mahindra XUV 7XO AX7L Diesel AT 2WD. With 70% city use, the AWD hardware is just extra weight on most days, costs more to purchase, and will be less fuel efficient. For HP and UK hill trips on normal tarmac, the diesel’s torque, good tyres and the drive modes are enough for climbs and wet hairpins. Simpler 2WD also means fewer drivetrain parts. You’ll only feel AWD’s real benefit in snow, slush, or on steep, broken tracks. If that kind of terrain is a regular thing each winter, then spending on the AWD makes sense.

I am planning to buy the Hyundai Creta Knight Edition with iVT. I have also taken a test drive of the top-end Tata Nexon DCA, and while it is a good car with excellent features and strong value for money, I did notice some lag in city traffic. My first preference is an automatic transmission. I am slightly confused about investing in the top-end version of the Creta, especially since a new facelift (K3 platform) is expected in the next 6-8 months. In that case, I am concerned that the current model may depreciate further in the resale market. Could you please suggest the best option available and advise whether I should go ahead with the current Creta offerings?

Go for the Creta Knight iVT. Like you mentioned, the Nexon's DCT gearbox can tend to hesitate in city traffic, and the Creta’s CVT automatic is much smoother and calmer in stop-go conditions. It also gives you more space and an easier, more comfortable ride for family runs, while the 1.5 petrol with this gearbox suits everyday city use very well.About the “new facelift in 6-8 months”, there is no official word yet. Even if a new version arrives next year, the Creta name holds strong value in the used car market. Do note, the Creta iVT is not the quickest when you floor it, so fast highway overtakes will need some planning especially when fully loaded. For a smooth city automatic and fuss-free ownership, buy the Creta now.

The Mahindra XEV 9S and XEV 9e would both be excellent choices within your budget. The key difference comes down to your space requirements. The XEV 9S is the one to choose if you need the flexibility of a 7-seat layout, while the XEV 9e is a 5-seater with a sleeker design and more emphasis on style. Beyond that, both models share the same battery packs and electric motors, so there is little to separate them in terms of performance, charging capability or range.While both have claimed ranges comfortably above 500km, in the real world you should expect closer to 450-470km on a full charge, depending on your driving style, speed and usage conditions. Even so, that remains among the best figures available in this price range.Your 5kW solar setup is an added advantage and should help keep charging costs very low over the long term.

I was planning to buy the Honda Amaze CVT earlier, but due to uncertainty around a higher percentage of ethanol blending, I have decided to go with the Tata Altroz diesel. But now I read that the government is also planning to blend isobutanol in diesel. Should I buy a diesel vehicle or not? Will isobutanol adversely affect diesel engines and affect fuel economy?

There is no reason to avoid either a petrol or a diesel car purely because of future fuel-blending plans.Just as modern petrol cars are being engineered to handle higher ethanol blends, any future diesel blend regulations will be accompanied by corresponding changes from vehicle manufacturers. If isobutanol blending is introduced, it will be done in a controlled manner, and vehicles sold in the market will be calibrated accordingly. There is currently no evidence to suggest that such blends would cause adverse effects on modern diesel engines when used within the prescribed limits.The more important question is whether a diesel suits your usage pattern. If your running is high and includes regular highway trips, the Altroz Diesel remains a compelling option. However, if your usage is predominantly urban, the Honda Amaze CVT is still the more sensible choice. It offers a smoother driving experience, lower complexity and none of the DPF-related concerns associated with modern diesel engines.

Which would be the better choice among the BYD Sealion 7, Mahindra XEV 9e, and Vinfast VF7? I currently own a Skoda Superb, which is 6 years old, and my ownership experience has been good so far. However, I am considering switching to an EV as a replacement, mainly because I am concerned about potential mechatronics-related repairs and higher maintenance costs as the car ages, even though I have not faced any issues yet. My heart says the BYD Sealion 7 would be the ideal replacement or upgrade for the Superb because of its build quality, premium cabin, and overall feel. However, my mind wonders whether it truly offers good value for money considering its premium price tag, although budget is not a major constraint for me. My daily driving is around 20-30 km, mostly within the city, with only occasional outstation trips. Considering my usage pattern and expectations, which of these EVs would you recommend?

Pick the BYD Sealion 7. It comes closest to your Superb in the way it feels inside and the calm, premium way it goes down the road, and BYD’s EV tech is well proven here. For 20-30km city usage it is smooth, very efficient, and the cabin quality, quietness and ride will feel like a real upgrade that's on par with luxury cars in the same price range.The Mahindra XEV 9e and Vinfast VF7 do sound like good value with the amount of performance and features they offer, but they both belong a size and segment down on the BYD, and that's reflected in the price too. Plus, though feature laden, their cabins will not give you the same plushness you enjoyed in your Skoda Superb. One catch with the Sealion 7 is BYD’s smaller network as compared to Mahindra. But with budget not being a big worry and your usage being mostly in the city, the peace-of-mind of mature EV hardware and genuine upmarket feel makes the BYD the right call for you. Charge at home and you will need to top up just once every few days.
