I am planning to purchase a primarily sub-4 metre automatic SUV for tax-saving purposes under the BH series registration. We are expecting a baby soon, so the car will mainly be used by a family of three, with occasional travel involving four people. I have already test driven the Skoda Kylaq, Mahindra XUV 3XO, and Maruti Brezza. While I am not a driving enthusiast by nature, I found the Brezza’s pick-up and acceleration above 70 km/h somewhat underwhelming. I loved almost everything about the Kylaq except for the AC performance, which feels like a major drawback for Indian summers and traffic conditions. As for the XUV 3XO, I have come across mixed reviews regarding high-speed stability and after-sales service, although I personally did not feel any issues during the test drive. My priorities are: Good fuel efficiency Comfortable city usability (monthly running around 600–800 km in Hyderabad) Performance and highway capability for 2-3 long trips annually Strong safety credentials Decent long-term maintenance costs and peace of mind ownership Good warranty and service packages My budget is around ₹14-15 lakh and can be stretched slightly if required. I am also open to considering sedans like the Honda City or slightly larger SUVs like the Honda Elevate if they make more sense overall. Could you please suggest the best option for my requirements?

Pick the Hyundai Venue diesel. Your driving is mostly on the highway and hills, and the diesel pulls strongly at low revs, making climbs easier. It will also save you money on long runs thanks to far better fuel economy than a petrol car. Your highway use will also keep the DPF or diesel particulate filter running at its best. The flip side is size. The downside is that the Venue is smaller than the Elevate. The rear seat is not as spacious, and the boot capacity is also lower.If you want a more relaxed highway feel and a roomier cabin, the Honda Elevate is the comfier mile‑eater. It's simple petrol is fuss‑free to own for years, but you will downshift more on steep climbs, and your fuel bills will be higher. The automatic also feels busy uphill.Other options worth checking are the Skoda Kylaq (strong engine and fun to drive, but a touch small for rear seat occupants) and the Mahindra XUV 3XO diesel. If cabin space is a key requirement, consider the Kia Syros diesel, which offers a very roomy interior.

If you want something that's compact and easy to drive while being efficient, then consider the Maruti Fronx or Toyota Taisor 1.0 Turbo 6AT. The engine is smooth, performance is strong, and the transmission works seamlessly. If you want a more "SUV" feel, then you could consider the turbo-petrol automatic versions of the Hyundai Venue, Skoda Kylaq or even the Mahindra XUV 3XO. The XUV is the most spacious and has the strongest engine; the Kylaq feels the sportiest to drive; while the Venue is very well-rounded, and thanks to its light steering, it feels easy to drive.

The Maruti Suzuki Brezza is the right choice for you. It's a sensible and no-nonsense compact SUV that delivers everything you want. It's easy to drive, ride comfort is good, and there's ample room for 4 passengers. The Brezza is also reasonably fuel-efficient as petrol automatic cars go. The Brezza is also reliable, and maintenance costs are affordable. Maruti's massive service network also adds peace of mind to the ownership experience. The Brezza doesn't feel as exciting or punchy as turbocharged rivals, especially out on highway drives, but performance, on the whole, is fair. The Brezza doesn't have a Global NCAP or Bharat NCAP safety rating, but we expect the updated model to be put to the test. The updated Brezza goes on sale later this month and would be the one to look out for.
