I currently own a Toyota Fortuner, two Mahindra Thar Roxx models, and an XUV700. I also previously owned a Scorpio N. I am now planning to sell one of my Thar Roxx vehicles, as it is an early production model and has been giving me several issues. My usage involves daily driving in rough terrain and mountainous conditions, so having a capable 4x4 is essential for me. Before the Roxx, I owned a 3-door Thar, and honestly, given my current usage, the 3-door version seems to suit my needs better. I am now confused about what to buy next. Should I go back to a 3-door Thar, continue with the Roxx, or consider another capable 4x4 option better suited for rough and mountain use?

Since you've already owned a Mahindra Thar 3-door, and you believe that it is the best for you, we would recommend you go ahead with it. You already know what the vehicle is capable of, and as an owner, you're aware of all its pros and cons too. There are no other options in the market that can deliver what the Thar can.

The Maruti Jimny is smaller, very tough, and surprisingly capable, although its engine performance is no match for the Mahindra. The Force Gurkha is capable off-road, but lacks the Thar's sophistication, and feels too crude in comparison.

Other monocoque AWD options include the Toyota Hyryder, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Victoris, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and dual-motor EV options like the Vinfast VF7 and Tata Harrier EV. Do note that while all these models will get you through sticky situations and handle mild trails easily, none are as good off-road as the Thar.

All things considered, go for the Thar; it seems to be the best fit for you.

I’m planning to upgrade my 10-year-old Petrol Manual Baleno Delta, which has completed around 1.1 lakh km. I’m currently considering Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 IVT with ADAS & 360° camera, Mahindra XUV 7XO AX5 Automatic and the newly refreshed Skoda Slavia AT. My usage will be primarily city driving, with occasional highway trips of around 600 km. My wife also prefers a higher seating position due to back pain. Which would be the best overall choice for my requirements? Should I consider the refreshed Slavia AT, or would either Seltos or XUV 7XO be more suitable? My top priority are safety, relatively low maintenance cost and good mileage. I am not very keen on car with a lot of features.

Go for the Kia Seltos HTX 1.5 IVT. It is the best fit for your requirements. Your usage is predominantly city driving with occasional long highway trips, and your wife prefers a higher seating position due to back pain. The Seltos offers a comfortable, slightly elevated driving position, good visibility and a well-balanced ride that makes it easy to live with in daily traffic. The 1.5-litre petrol engine paired with the IVT automatic is smooth, reliable and efficient, which aligns well with your priorities of low maintenance costs and good mileage. Kia's service network is strong, and the Seltos has a solid ownership track record.The Mahindra XUV 7XO AX5 Automatic is a good car, but it is a larger, heavier SUV and the petrol automatic is not as efficient as the Seltos IVT. It is also a bigger car to manoeuvre in the city, which may not be ideal given your usage pattern. The refreshed Skoda Slavia AT is a nice sedan with a comfortable ride and strong performance, but it does not offer the higher seating position your wife prefers.The Seltos HTX IVT strikes the right balance between comfort, safety, reliability and ease of ownership. It is the car you are most likely to be happy with over the next 5-10 years.

With 76,000 km in 4 years, you are clearly a high-mileage user, and that changes the EV equation. The bigger question is whether you are ready for the electric car ownership experience. If you have reliable home charging and your usage pattern is predictable, the Mahindra XEV 9S can make sense. But if your driving includes frequent long highway trips or unpredictable routes, the Mahindra XUV 7XO petrol remains the more hassle-free option for now, or perhaps a diesel to bring down your fuel bills.As for the XEV 9S is a very interesting product and will feel like a natural slide over from your 700; however, expect a softer-sprung suspension, which can be discomforting to passengers who feel travel sick, and the electronic features, while plentiful, can cause some more niggles than your 700. These points aside, the XEV9S is a good EV worth considering.

We are planning to upgrade from a Hyundai i10 to an automatic petrol compact SUV under Rs 14 lakh. We have shortlisted the Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT and Skoda Kylaq Prestige AT. We liked the Venue, but we are not sure about the maintenance cost of its DCT gearbox.

Yes, dual-clutch automatic gearboxes are more complex and can be expensive to repair if something goes wrong. That said, the Hyundai Venue Turbo DCT is quite well-sorted.
