Scuderia Ferrari has unveiled the F1-75, its latest challenger for the upcoming F1 2022 season. The name is a nod to the 75th anniversary of Ferrari’s first production car – the 125 S – leaving the factory in March 1947.

Ferrari F1-75: what’s new?

Ferrari was among the first teams to switch resources to the 2022 car. Having spent two seasons without any wins, the Italian squad will be hoping that the F1-75 can help it return to a more competitive form to consistently fight for wins.

The new rules bring in F1’s most significant design change in decades and is aimed at promoting closer racing. Changes include the reintroduction of ground effects, more simplified front wings, bigger rear wings, wheel-wake control devices, a simplified suspension and low-profile tyres with larger 18-inch rims. Additionally, F1 has also made some changes to the sprint race format, with more points up for grabs.

As we’ve seen this year, teams appear to have adopted quite diverse interpretations of the new regulations, and the F1-75 is another example. Speaking at the launch of the car, Scuderia Ferrari team principal Mattia Bonotto said that the team has “interpreted the rules thinking out of the box”.

The uniquely sculpted sidepods feature louvres – like Aston Martin’s AMR22 – with a low and sharper nose being another unique feature on the SF-75. The new livery also features a darker shade of red and a special 75th anniversary logo.

Ferrari power unit updates

“A lot of effort has gone into the power unit,” added Binotto. “Its packaging is completely different, especially in terms of the cooling. We worked a lot on the power unit over this winter season – on top of what we did last year – because we knew it would be a key element.”

He added, “So there’s been a lot of innovative work on the combustion engine and we have further developed the hybrid part that we introduced last season. So I’d say that under here, there’s a lot going on that’s new. The suspension has also undergone some development.”

The F1-75 will be piloted by Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Pre-season testing kicks off at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on February 23.
