The Formula Bharat student competition is back for its eighth edition, set to take place at Coimbatore’s Kari Motor Speedway from January 19-24, 2024. The latest edition will see participation from 26 combustion teams and 31 electric teams from India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Dubai and Nepal.

What is Formula Bharat?

Every year, Formula Bharat tasks engineering students to design and fabricate formula-style prototype vehicles. The purpose is to encourage students to gain hands-on experience, along with practically applying engineering theories they’ve learned in classrooms. The competition is divided into two categories – Combustion and Electric. All participating teams need to seek sponsorship and donations to fund their projects, making this a handy training ground for those who want to work in the automotive industry.

Across the six days of completion, a jury – comprising experts from the motorsport, automotive and supplier industries – will thoroughly evaluate all the teams and their vehicles. Participants will be judged on engineering design, overall cost, marketability and dynamic performance. On-track assessments at the Kari Motor Speedway will test the real-world performance and durability of the prototypes. These dynamics tests include an acceleration event, autocross, endurance and efficiency tests and even a skid pad course.

Veloce Racing (Vishwakarma Institute of Technology) won last year’s Formula Bharat competition in the Combustion category, while STES Stallion Motorsport Electric (Kashibai Navale College of Engineering) won in the electric category.
