Volvo is currently testing a long-wheelbase version of its range-topping S90 sedan. Thinly disguised test mules wearing an S90L badge were spotted testing in China, the market where it is expected to be exclusively offered.

The S90L's appearance is identical to the standard sedan's, but gets a longer rear door for the extra length. Going by the spy pictures, this version of the S90 that will be aimed at chauffeur-driven customers seems to have a received a good extension over its already long 2,941mm wheelbase. While there are no official details, Volvo could stretch the wheelbase by as much as 100mm to free up rear legroom.

Mechanically, the engines are expected to be from the standard S90, which for the Chinese market points towards a line-up of four-cylinder petrol engines in different states of tune topped by the company’s T8 Hybrid powerplant.

Chinese car buyers are known for their preference for extended wheelbase models. To cater to the local demand, many carmakers offer special China-spec 'L' versions of standard models, some of which are even based on SUVs.

Volvo currently sells China-specific, long-wheelbase versions of the S80 and the S60 sedans. When launched, the new S90L will replace the S80L. Its prime rivals will include long-wheelbase versions of the BMW 5-series, the new Mercedes E-class and the Audi A6.

While most of these versions are limited to China which is a left-hand-drive market, Mercedes has confirmed a long-wheelbase E-class in right-hand drive for India next year.

Volvo is set to launch the standard S90 sedan in India this September with bookings currently open. The sedan will also be the first Volvo in the country to use radar-based safety systems.
