Swedish automaker Volvo has confirmed that it will be showcasing the new S90 sedan at the Detroit motor show in January next year. Volvo also released teaser images of the soon-to-be-revealed S80 replacement with images depicting the profile of the car and the shape of the tail-lamps.

Set to rival the likes of the BMW 5-series, Mercedes E-class and Jaguar XF, Volvo has described the S90 as being “the real test” for the brand following the launch of the second-generation XC90 earlier this year. Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK, Volvo’s research and development head Peter Mertens said that the new S90 and its estate sibling the V90 were a "step beyond" what had been achieved with the XC90. “The styling and the interior design will take a substantial step over the
XC90. We have made a bigger effort for the sedan,” he said.

In international markets, the new S90 and its sibling the V90 are expected to share powertrains with the XC90; the cars would be offered with a range of D4 and D5 diesel engines and a range of petrol engines including the range-topping T8 ‘Twin Engine’ PHEV drivetrain.

When it comes to India, the S90 is expected to be powered by Volvo’s range of Drive-E 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel engines that currently sit under the hood of the XC90.

Mertens also revealed that the company was developing a long-wheelbase version of the S90 specifically aimed at the Chinese market.
