The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has permanently exempted vintage and classic cars from its ban that affects cars that are 15 years or older in Delhi-NCR. The new order states that these vehicles, if registered under the Motor Vehicles Act and used for exhibitions, rallies and the like, will be exempt.

Before this announcement and as per the ban, classic and vintage models were to be scrapped along with other cars that were 15 years old. Instituted earlier this year, the ban was opposed by enthusiasts and owners, saying that the cars held great value and are of historical importance.

The ban on vehicles older than 15 years was brought into effect to help curb the recent increase in air pollution in the Delhi-NCR area. This is one of the many measures the green tribunal has mandated including the odd-even scheme and the creation of parking facilities to reduce road-side parking.
