Mercedes has teased its upcoming CLS in an official preview image, which shows the front of the model that is scheduled to debut at the 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show.

The design of the Audi A7 and Porsche Panamera rival is similar to the outgoing model though the headlamps and grille are sharper. The new CLS will inherit design features inspired by the E-class, with sharper styling to match its sleeker shape.

Speaking to our sister publication Autocar UK, insiders had revealed that the CLS has been developed with a focus on luxury and refinement, in order to create a clearer gap between it and the similarly shaped upcoming four-door AMG GT.

The top-of-the-line CLS is likely to use AMG's turbocharged 3.0-litre unit mated to a 50kW electric motor. Sporting the CLS 53 nameplate, it will be the first of several Mercedes-AMGs to adopt the number.

With an output that is expected to exceed 450hp, it may be down on power compared to the outgoing CLS 63, but the hybrid model’s electric torque-filling ability should ensure it is closer in terms of performance.

The hybrid will feature regenerative braking technology as part of Mercedes’ 48V electric architecture to help recharge its lithium-ion batteries.

The CLS is expected to share its underpinnings and engine and transmission range with the E-class, along with borrowing some of its semi-autonomous driving technology such as Speed Limit Pilot, which automatically adjusts the speed of the vehicle in relation to posted speed limits, and Active Lane Change Assist, which is able to autonomously perform a lane change.

Unlike the current-gen model that features a Shooting Brake (read estate) version in some international markets, the next-gen CLS will not be offered in any other bodystyle due to low demand for the estate.

Mercedes is expected to bring the CLS to India sometime next year.
