Upcoming Mercedes AMG CLE 63 spied in Spain
Quad exhaust tips of AMG GLE 63 coupe

The upcoming Mercedes-AMG CLE 63 was spotted with mild camouflaging at a parking lot in Spain, and we have the latest spy shots thanks to our friends from Motor.es. Until now, Mercedes has not confirmed the launch timeline of the AMG CLE 63, which is essentially a high-performance version of the Mercedes CLE coupe.

  1. Demand for AMG PHEVs is below that for V8 predecessors
  2. AMG to continue launching V8-powered models

The camo wrapping was partially stripped away, showing a refreshed front bumper with active aero flaps on either side. The production model may end up being wider than the CLE 53, featuring a more aggressive and performance-oriented face.

The side profile was not covered at all, boasting the two-door coupe silhouette. Apart from the matte black paint finish on the spied car, the signature Mercedes fin on the front fenders marked its presence. Interestingly, we could not spot a ‘Turbo 4Matic+’ or ‘V8’ badge on the fenders, which may be due to it being a prototype. The alloy wheels’ design appears identical to the ones on the CLE 53. At the back, the squared-off quad exhaust tips echo those seen on other AMG 63 cars, and a spoiler is visible as well.

Mercedes AMG CLE 63: engine details

Mercedes AMG CLE 63 AMG front

Autocar India can confirm that the upcoming AMG CLE 63 will get a 4.0-litre twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engine developing up to 593hp. This decision reverses the previous plan to give the coupe the same 680hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain as seen in the latest C 63 and GLC 63 models. AMG purists have not been in favour of Mercedes’ new PHEV system, which combines a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and a rear-axle mounted electric motor.

Notably, the new AMG M177 V8 engine with mild-hybrid tech will hurl the most powerful versions of the new CLE, as reported by our sister publication, Autocar UK. Considering the 449hp-AMG CLE 53’s 0-100kph time of 4.2 seconds, the AMG CLE 63 may clock the same in under 4 seconds as it is significantly more powerful.
