Mercedes has started testing prototypes of its next-gen E-class Coupe, prior to the reveal of its four-door sedan sibling. The heavily camouflaged test mule shares styling details with the sedan as well as borrows elements from the more expensive S-class Coupe.

The test mule spotted featured a flowing design with sharply raked windscreens at the front and rear and an angled boot-lid – a detail borrowed from the S-class Coupe. The front features swept-back headlamps in line with the units featured on the S- and C-class, with a prominent grille separating the two units. However, the grille design was hidden. At the back, there are wrap-around tail-lamps, styled similarly to the S-class Coupe’s units, along with heavily disguised bumpers.

The new E-class Coupe will share engines with its sedan counterpart. This could mean a line-up of four and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines and a range-topping AMG V8.

Based on the MRA platform, the new coupé will be larger than the car it replaces and is also expected to be lighter by around 150kg.

The new E-class Coupe is expected to make its public debut in 2016 following the launch of the E-class sedan.
