Bosch has just revealed the world map of an analysis – use of different powertrains worldwide. The global automotive supplier says that every fifth vehicle that is sold in Japan is a hybrid, spark-ignition engines make a majority of sales in China, while Europe and India majorly buy diesel cars. To summarize the analysis based on the powertrain, here is what Bosch found out.

Petrol engines: Globally, petrol engines are the most popular powertrain. Its largest market is China with close to 100 percent new car sales, while in the USA and Japan, the figure stands close to 75 percent. A lot of engines are being downsized, while combining direct injection with it,  thereby reducing fuel consumption by a good 15 percent.

Diesel engines: In India, every second new car that is bought is a diesel car, however, in other markets besides the core markets, diesel engines are becoming increasingly popular. In the European markets too, the sales reflect the benefits of diesel engines – they use 25 percent lesser fuel as compared to a petrol engine, and they deliver over 40 percent more torque.

Hybrid and electric engines: In Japan, nearly every fifth new car that is bought has a hybrid powertrain. This, Bosch claims, makes the country the leader in electrification, however, the number of electric and hybrid powertrains will be high outside Japan as well. Bosch forecasts that of a predicted 113 million total vehicles sold worldwide in 2020, 6.5 million will be strong hybrids, three million will be plug-in hybrids, and 2.5 million will be all-electric (assuming a total of 113 million vehicles sold in 2020).

Flex Fuels: Engines that can run on both petrol and ethanol are quite popular in Brazil, followed by the USA. This enables drivers to run their cars on a mix of petrol and ethanol, or either of the two fuels.

Compressed Natural Gas: CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) powertrains are becoming increasingly popular across the world. For the past decade, sales have been on a steady rise, and have been growing by 25 percent worldwide.
