Toyota has launched the second-generation Fortuner at a starting price of Rs 25.92 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). Unlike its predecessor, the Fortuner now gets the option of a petrol engine, which is the 2.7-litre unit recently launched on the Innova Crysta, alongside the diesel unit.

Prices for the Fortuner petrol range from Rs 25.92 to 27.61 lakh, and the diesel range starts at Rs 27.52 lakh for the base two-wheel-drive manual and going up to Rs 31.12 lakh for the top all-wheel-drive automatic.

Toyota has launched the new Fortuner with two engine options – the above mentioned 166hp 2.7-litre petrol motor and the more mainstream 177hp 2.8-litre diesel engine also shared with the Innova Crysta. The petrol motor is paired to either a five-speed manual or six-speed automatic, while for the diesel unit both the manual and automatic gearboxes are six-speed units. The diesel models additionally get the option of Toyota’s new Sigma 4 all-wheel-drive system that, as per the automaker, features active traction control on all four wheels.

The new Fortuner has moved more upmarket and that is evident from the equipment on offer. It gets a powered tailgate with memory function for opening height, electric adjust and retractable wing mirrors, leather upholstery, eight-way power adjust driver seat, auto climate control, 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system and one-touch-tumble second and third row seats. It is also the first SUV in its class to use automatic LED projector headlamps.

Toyota has also paid attention to occupant protection with the equipment list including in seven airbags and ABS. The SUV also gets features like stability control, hill hold assist, hill descent control, paddle shifters and cruise control depending on the model’s drivetrain. Additionally, all two-wheel-drive models come with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the all-wheel drive iterations use larger 18-inch units.

The Fortuner was first launched in India in 2009 and went on to become a success. However, in the last one year, sales saw a bit of decline. But now with the new Fortuner, which will go up against the all-new Endeavour and the Chevrolet Trailblazer with its premium pricing, we will have to see if it builds on the success of its predecessor and reinforces itself as the segment bestseller.
