Following the launch of the mild-hybrid versions of the S90 and XC60 in October, Volvo has now launched a mild-hybrid version of its flagship XC90 SUV in India. Priced at Rs 89.90 lakh (ex-showroom, India), the mild-hybrid petrol engine on the new Volvo XC90 replaces the 2.0-litre diesel engine that was previously available, thus completing Volvo’s transition from diesel to petrol-only models in India, before it moves on to electric from 2022. The new petrol mild-hybrid XC90 is available in a sole B6 Inscription trim.

Volvo XC90 petrol mild-hybrid: powertrain details

The biggest update on the new XC90 is, of course, under its hood. Gone is the 235hp, 2.0-litre diesel engine; in comes the new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that works in conjunction with a 48V integrated starter-generator motor. This engine produces 300hp and 420Nm of peak torque on the XC90, which is 65hp more powerful than the outgoing diesel version, but torque is down by 60Nm. The engine comes mated to an 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission with all-wheel drive being offered as standard. The XC90 also gets air suspension as standard fitment.

Volvo also continues to offer the XC90 with a petrol plug-in hybrid powertrain that couples a 303hp, 2.0-litre petrol engine with an 87hp electric motor. Positioned as the flagship model in Volvo India’s range, the XC90 Recharge retails in India for a price of Rs 96.65 lakh (ex-showroom, India).

Volvo XC90 petrol mild-hybrid: exterior and interior

Unlike the S90 and XC60 that received subtle cosmetic makeover with their mild-hybrid hearts, there are absolutely no design updates on the new XC90. Even the alloy wheel design remains unchanged. The XC90 is now available in four exterior colour options to choose from  Crystal White Pearl, Onyx Black, Denim Blue and Pine Grey.

Likewise, there are no updates to interior design, trim or upholstery. You can spec your XC90 in two interior themes – Amber or Brown – with wood, metal, crystal and leather bringing out the sense of luxury inside the cabin.

In terms of features, the XC90 gets a new ‘Advanced Air Cleaner’ system which filters cabin air and displays air quality on the 9-inch infotainment screen. However, unlike the S90 and XC60 that were updated with a new Google-powered infotainment software, the XC90 has not been updated with the same. Other highlights on the XC90 include a 12.3-inch digital driver’s display, head-up display, Bowers and Wilkins sound system, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats with massage function, 4-zone climate control, panoramic sunroof and much more.

Safety features on the new XC90 include pilot assist, lane keeping aid, blind spot information system with cross traffic alert, collision mitigation support, 360-degree camera and park assist pilot. As before, the XC90 continues to be full-size 7-seater SUV.
