Volvo has revealed its India plans for the next couple of years, underlining its push for greener vehicles and confirming the launch of four models by 2022. Days after the Swedish brand had announced its global plans to shift to fully electric powertrains by 2030, Volvo Auto India has announced an accelerated schedule for our market.

  • Volvo plans to double volumes with an electric and petrol portfolio
  • Plans to launch one new EV every year
  • XC60 SUV and S90 sedan to get petrol powertrains

Volvo India’s big push for EVs

As per the brand’s global plans, 50 percent of Volvo’s annual sales are expected to be from EVs. For India, the Swedish company plans to have EVs comprise 80 percent of its sales in the country. This goal is a part of Volvo’s plans to double its sales volumes in the country with electric and petrol cars.

To meet this target, Volvo will bring the XC40 Recharge to India this year, and the recently revealed SUV-coupe version of the all-electric SUV, the C40 Recharge, in 2022. The brand promises one new EV will follow every year.

A new dedicated micro-site is also being set-up on Volvo India’s website for the upcoming all-electric vehicles, in order to attract potential buyers. The brand has stated that it will shift sales online in international markets, though dealerships will still be heavily involved in the process.

2021 Volvo S90, XC60 to shift to petrol engines

For now, Volvo has three diesel offerings in its India portfolio – the S90 sedan, the XC60 mid-size SUV and the XC90 full-size SUV. Volvo has now confirmed that the XC60 and the S90 will both get petrol powertrains this year in a bid to phase out diesels from its India line-up.

While it has yet to be revealed which state of tune the 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine will be in, Volvo offers it in international markets in T4 (190hp, turbocharged), T5 (250hp, turbocharged) and T6 (310hp, turbocharged and supercharged) tunes.

The S90 sedan is also likely to get cosmetic changes inside and out similar to the facelifted model revealed last year.
