Whether or not it fits your idea of a ‘mini SUV’, the new Maruti Suzuki S-Presso sure has appeal for buyers on a budget. It’s got a roomy cabin, promises to be efficient and comes backed by Maruti’s vast service network. Maruti S-Presso prices range from Rs 3.69-4.91 lakh and the line-up includes four trim levels and two gearbox options to choose from. We tell which is the best one to buy.
What are the engine and gearboxes on offer?
There’s just one petrol motor engine on offer with the S-Presso – a BS6-compliant version of Maruti’s ubiquitous 1.0-litre K10B unit. While the engine makes the same 68hp and 90Nm of torque as the BS4-spec version, its ARAI-rated fuel efficiency figure is slightly lower. Still the three-cylinder motor retains its peppy nature and is quiet and smooth too. The light 5-speed manual is nice enough and the 5-speed AMT – which is only available on the top two variants – is easily among the best of the kind. We’d recommend going with the latter only if you’re willing to spend the extra Rs 43,000 for the convenience of an automatic.
What are the variants on offer?
The S-Presso is available in four variants, namely Std, LXi, VXi and VXi+. Talking safety features, all variants get a driver airbag, ABS, rear parking sensors, front seatbelt reminders and a speed alert system as standard. A passenger airbag and seatbelt pre-tensioners are standard fit on the top-spec VXi+ version but can be had as part of a Rs 6,000 optional pack on the lower trims.

We wouldn’t recommend the S-Presso Std as it is absolutely basic; a digital speedometer is the only talking point really. The LXi trim adds features like air conditioning, power steering and sun visors for about Rs 36,000 more. However, it’s the higher-spec VXi trim that’s of greater interest. For all of Rs 19,000 more than the LXi, it adds in remote central locking, speed sensitive door locks, a 2-DIN audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, a 12V accessory socket, front power windows, body coloured bumpers and wheel covers for the larger 14-inch steel wheels (lower variants get 13-inch wheels).
The top-spec VXi+ variant costs an additional Rs 24,000 and get kit like dual front airbags, body coloured wing mirrors and door handles, internally adjustable wing mirrors, steering-mounted audio controls, and the 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility.
Which is the version to buy?
You really can’t go wrong with manual or AMT auto versions of the S-Presso. While the AMT is the more convenient option, the manual’s slick gearbox and light clutch is easy enough to live with too.
As for the variants, the fully-loaded Maruti Suzuki S-Presso VXi+ gets the most goodies and is easily the most enticing trim of the range. However, for buyers on a budget, it’s the VXi(O), with the manual gearbox, that will make the most sense. The VXi(O) trim is well priced and comes with a decent level of creature comforts and all the necessary safety kit.
