Maruti Suzuki has announced that its most affordable offering that retails out of its premium Nexa network, the Ignis, has crossed one lakh in sales. The funky hatchback was introduced in January 2017 and has averaged over 3,500 units per month since its launch. While the Ignis might not be a hot-seller according to Maruti’s standards, it still holds its own compared to its competition. In the fiscal year 2019, the tall-boy hatch found 36,144 takers, which is 23.46 percent down compared to the previous financial year.
The Ignis received a mild refresh earlier this year, which saw the addition of roof rails on higher trims and safety features like reverse parking sensors, speed alert system and a passenger seatbelt reminder, becoming standard. As such, the Maruti Ignis comes decently equipped with LED projector headlamps and DRLs, electrically adjustable and foldable exterior mirrors, keyless entry, push button start, auto climate control, reverse camera and a 7.0-inch touchscreen infotainment with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. On the safety front dual airbags, ABS, EBD, BA and Isofix child seat mounts are offered across the range.
Maruti’s trusty 1.2-litre K12B petrol engine does duty under the hood. It is good for 83hp of power and 113Nm of torque, and comes paired to either a 5-speed manual or an AMT automatic gearbox. Like the recently launched BS-VI Maruti Baleno, the Ignis is also likely to get a BS-VI-compliant engine soon. The Ignis was also available earlier with a diesel engine option, but due to a slump in demand, it was discontinued back in 2018. As such, it goes up against the likes of Ford Freestyle and Mahindra KUV100 NXT in our market.
