As we've reported earlier, the updated Verna will be available in four trims and five engine-gearbox combinations, translating into a total of 11 versions. The facelift sees the midsize sedan receive cosmetic updates, inside and out, along with getting more equipment and a line-up of new engines.

On the outside, the mid-cycle update brings a revised front fascia replete with a larger grille and new headlamps, along with new-design alloy wheels, revised tail-lamps and rear bumper. While the cabin remains similar to the previous model, it has been spruced up, with faux wood trim on the dashboard, new-look AC vents and a tweaked colour scheme for the upholstery.

In terms of engine options, the facelifted Verna is offered with a choice of three BS6-compliant units – two petrol and one diesel. The first of the two petrol engines is a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated unit that’s good for 115hp and 144Nm of torque. It is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox as standard, with a CVT option also available. The second unit is the 1.0-litre turbo-petrol unit from the Venue, developing 120hp and 172Nm of torque. This unit comes exclusively paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox as standard.

Moving on to the diesels, the power plant in question is also a 1.5-litre unit that puts out 115hp and 250Nm of peak twisting force. The unit can be had with 6-speed manual and torque converter automatic gearbox options.

Coming to equipment, the fully-loaded Verna gets kit such as a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, Arkamys audio system, full-digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, hands-free tailgate opening, wireless mobile phone charger and a sunroof. Another big inclusion is the brand’s Blue Link connectivity suits with 45 features, including voice commands for in-car functions, remote engine and air-con operation (automatics only). The Blue Link system also allows for owners to access certain in-car functions via their smart watches.

On the safety front, the Verna packs in two airbags, ABS, rear parking sensors and front seat belt reminders as standard, with higher variants getting additional tech such as a total of six airbags, ESC, reverse camera, front parking sensors (turbo-petrol variant only) and a tyre pressure monitoring system.

Like the model it replaces, the Verna facelift rivals the Maruti Suzuki Ciaz, Honda City, Skoda Rapid and Volkswagen Vento, each of whom are set to become petrol-only models from April 1. This gives Hyundai the advantage of being the only midsize sedan to offer a diesel engine option when the new BS6 emission norms roll in. The Honda City will get a BS6-compliant diesel engine option when the current model is replaced by the new-gen model, later this year.
