The Audi Q5 Sportback has officially been unveiled. Sporting a coupé-SUV body style, it is based on the recently showcased Audi Q5 facelift that is India bound in 2021. The new Audi Q5 Sportback will get a range of petrol and diesel engines and packs in a host of modern tech on the exterior and interior.

  • New Audi Q5 Sportback gets a swooping roofline and raked tailgate

  • Q5 Sportback will be powered by a range petrol and diesel engines

  • Takes on the likes of the BMW X4 and Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe

Audi Q5 Sportback Design

The Q5 Sportback is a great looking SUV with its coupé proportions and swooping roofline. The raked tailgate gets a built-in spoiler and the SUV has a drag coefficient of just 0.30.

Apart from the coupé lines, the Q5 Sportback also packs in all the updates that we saw on the recently showcased Q5 facelift. The front end gets a single-frame grille that makes the car look wider, and the large air vents in the front bumper add to that sportier stance that the coupé body brings to the table.

Audi also offers a whopping 21 wheel choices, all the way from 18 inches in diameter, to large 21-inch optional wheels. Around the back, the Q5 Sportback gets the same silver treatment on the lower half of the bumper that we see at the front and on the side skirts, with a chrome trim piece connecting the tail-lamps.

Audi Q5 Sportback OLED tail-lamps

While the headlamps feature Matrix LED tech, just like the standard Q5, the Sportback gets OLED tail lamps too. Press the lock/unlock button and a rather cool pattern greets you, and customers can even choose between different lighting setups when they spec the Q5.

Putting the car into Dynamic mode also changes the lighting pattern, while the OLED tail-lamps also light up if another vehicle approaches within two metres of the car as a proximity warning.

Audi Q5 Sportback tech

The Audi Q5 Sportback gets a 12.3-inch instrument cluster with a heads-up display and a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The multi-function steering wheel is also the same as on the standard Q5 and can be used to control nearly all of the SUV’s functions.

Additionally, the car also gets Audi’s new MIB 3 or Modular Infotainment Platform, which is 10 times faster than its predecessor. There is also connected car tech with swarm intelligence that can help the driver with data about road and weather conditions, obstructions or accidents and even help find a free parking spot.

It is also interesting to note that, while the tailgate is so steeply raked, boot space has been reduced by just 10 litres as compared to the standard Q5, at 510 litres with the standard seats, or 570 litres with the adjustable rear seat package.

And while the Q5 Sportback is marginally longer than the standard Q5, width and height have stayed the same, thereby having little effect on rear seat space.

Audi Q5 Sportback engines

The first engine that Audi will offer at launch internationally will be a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel that makes 204hp and 400Nm, mated to a 7-speed S-tronic dual-clutch auto gearbox and Quattro all-wheel-drive.

The engine also gets a mild hybrid setup that cuts off the engine while the car is coasting. The diesel engine is Euro 6 complaint with an AdBlue-equipped dual-SCR system – one close to the exhaust manifold and the other further down the exhaust stream for reduced emissions.

Audi will also offer a 4-cylinder TFSI petrol engine and a larger and more powerful V6 diesel.

Audi Q5 Sportback India launch and competitors

The Audi Q5 Sportback takes on the likes of the BMW X4 and the Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe, both of which are sold here in India.

While there is no official timeline on when the new Audi Q5 Sportback will make it to our shores, considering that its two closest rivals are sold here, albeit in limited numbers, it only makes sense for Audi to bring this stylish SUV to India soon.

Internationally, the Q5 Sportback will only be available in the first half of 2021 and will be assembled in Audi’s San Jose Chiapa plant in Mexico or built in Changchun in China specifically for the Chinese market.
