The upcoming SQ2 will follow the form of the rest of Audi’s S range with more power and sportier design features than its previous standard model. Changes to the model over the standard Q2 will include quad-exhausts, more prominent bumpers, a black front grille and extra-black trim.
The faster version of the Q2 is expected to be powered by the same 2.0-litre, turbocharged, four-cylinder engine as the S3. In the hot hatch, it produces 310hp, but insiders expect the crossover’s peak horsepower to hover around the 300hp-mark.
The T-Roc R will be its main rival when it arrives in international markets in 2018. Although the two models are from the same stable, they will have different characteristics to make sure they appeal to different audiences. The SQ2 will likely continue to be marketed as a 'trendy' offering, while recent comments from Volkswagen chassis boss Karsten Schebsdat suggest the T-Roc R will be more playful to drive.
Insiders expect an even faster Q2 to join, later into the model’s production lifetime. It is expected to be badged as an 'RSQ2' and utilise power from the same turbocharged five-cylinder engine as the RS3. In that car, as much as 367hp is on offer; which gives some idea of how potent the RSQ2 could be. A standout rival for such a car would be the Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, which produces 381hp.
The Audi Q2 has great potential in the Indian market should it arrive, though there is no word from Audi concerning a launch. However, with the German manufacturer testing the new Audi A8L and the Q8 in the country, these two models are more likely to arrive first.
