KTM RC 390 Expert Review
7
The KTM RC 390 gets a completely new design that looks sharper and more purposeful than before. The new bodywork is also more aerodynamic, while the blue-and-orange colour scheme adds to its appeal. Build quality is generally solid, although the switchgear feels a little clicky and some panel gaps could be tidier. The new LED headlight and Bluetooth-enabled TFT display are useful additions.
7
The RC 390 has a more relaxed riding position than its predecessor, with less strain on the back, neck and wrists. The seat is also better shaped and better padded, making longer rides more manageable. Riders looking for a more aggressive stance can lower the clip-ons by around 14mm. Overall, it remains sporty but is now easier to live with.
8
The 373cc single-cylinder engine produces 43.5hp and 37Nm, making the RC 390 one of the most powerful bikes in its segment. The larger airbox brings a small increase in torque, while the engine feels tractable and linear with smoother throttle response. Vibrations are also better controlled, although acceleration starts to taper off noticeably beyond 120kph.
9
The RC 390 remains an agile and sharp-handling motorcycle, but it is now more predictable and easier to ride hard. The longer-travel suspension improves its ability to deal with bumps, while the adjustable rear monoshock adds some setup flexibility. However, the non-adjustable front fork is a missed opportunity. The rear Metzeler tyre can also lose grip when accelerating hard out of corners, limiting an otherwise capable chassis.
8
The RC 390 gets a strong electronics package, including an IMU, cornering ABS, traction control and a bi-directional quickshifter. Its Bluetooth-enabled TFT display supports music controls, call alerts and turn-by-turn navigation. The quickshifter works smoothly, although the traction control did not always intervene effectively during aggressive track riding.
8
The KTM RC 390 has evolved from a raw, hardcore sportbike into a more rounded and versatile motorcycle without losing much of its track ability. Its improved comfort, electronics, performance and usability make it a stronger all-round package, although the tyre performance and lack of front suspension adjustability remain drawbacks.
