KTM 890 Adventure R

The KTM 890 Adventure R has a distinctive, off-road-focused design with its slim bodywork and side-mounted 20-litre fuel tanks. The low-slung tanks help keep the weight balanced, while the 880mm seat height and narrow layout create excellent standing ergonomics. However, some parts, such as the mirrors and handguards, feel basic for a motorcycle at this price.

The tall 880mm seat is wide enough to remain comfortable on long rides, while the slim body makes the bike feel more like a dirt bike when standing. Taller riders will find the ergonomics natural, but shorter riders will need confidence and experience, especially off-road. Highway comfort is reasonable, although wind protection is limited.

The 889cc parallel-twin engine produces 103hp and 100Nm, delivering strong and effortless performance. Compared with the 790, the 890 has a calmer and more manageable throttle response in standard road modes, while Rally mode sharpens things up. The engine is well suited to relaxed highway cruising as well as aggressive off-road riding.

The 890 Adventure R is exceptionally capable off-road, with superb suspension that absorbs big hits and rough landings with ease. The Mitas Enduro Trail+ tyres offer good confidence, while the chassis remains composed across challenging terrain. On the road, it prefers a smooth riding style, and the 215kg weight becomes noticeable in tight corners and difficult situations. Braking performance is strong but lacks initial bite.

The 890 Adventure R gets a comprehensive electronics package, including riding modes, traction control, and other rider aids. However, several key features are locked behind the optional Tech Pack, which costs an additional fee. This unlocks Rally mode, cruise control, the bi-directional quickshifter and motor slip regulation.

The KTM 890 Adventure R is an extremely capable and entertaining off-road motorcycle. Its tall stance, weight, limited road-focused refinement and extra cost for the Tech Pack are drawbacks, while reliability concerns also remain. However, its outstanding suspension, powerful engine and off-road ability make it a compelling choice for experienced riders.
