Yamaha is likely readying the new YZF-R9 for an unveiling soon. At least that’s what can be speculated after it filed a fresh trademark application to protect the YZF-R9 logo and branding style. A photo of the Yamaha YZF-R9’s logo is circulating online, showing the typical Yamaha ‘R’ series bike logo style and font. Previously, Yamaha had trademarked the YZF-R9 word in multiple countries, including India.

Yamaha YZF-R9: What to expect?

If at all Yamaha unveils the YZF-R9 soon, expect it to be a fully-faired version of the MT-09 street bike, like the R7 is to the MT-07. This means the YZF-R9 may be powered by the MT-09’s 890cc, three-cylinder, liquid-cooled engine. This engine, in the street naked, makes 119hp and 93Nm and it might be in the same state of tune in the YZF-R9. The supersport will also double up as a track bike and we can expect Yamaha to equip it with mechanicals from the MT-09’s SP variant, which will include the adjustable suspension and braking set-up. The IMU-based electronics suite is also expected to be present in the YZF-R9.

When it comes to styling, it’ll be interesting to see what Yamaha comes up with. The YZF-R1, YZF-R7, YZF-R3 and even the YZF-R15 have largely similar design languages, and the YZF-R9 might follow suit. However, it could get slightly different shapes for some of the body panels or a different positioning for the headlights.

In all, the YZF-R9 would serve to bridge the gap between the YZF-R7 and the flagship, 200hp, YZF-R1 superbike.
