India Yamaha Motor (IYM) Pvt. Ltd. has said it has manufactured one million units of the R15 motorcycle at its Surajpur facility. The model, launched in 2008, has maintained consistent sales, with 90 percent of units sold in the domestic market, while the remainder serves export markets.

The model has undergone four major updates since its introduction. The 2008 model featured a liquid-cooled engine and Deltabox frame. The V2.0 version in 2011 added an aluminium swingarm, followed by the V3 in 2018 with a 155cc VVA engine and slipper clutch. The current V4 model, released in 2021, includes traction control and quick shifter features.

"The R15 embodies Yamaha's Racing DNA with cutting-edge technology, thrilling design, and unmatched performance," said Itaru Otani, chairman of India Yamaha Motor Group of Companies.

He added, "With every iteration of the R15, we have elevated the riding experience, making the R15 the top choice for young enthusiasts. We extend our immense gratitude to our customers for their unwavering trust and to our employees for their dedication, which has been instrumental in achieving this landmark." The production milestone reflects the model's market presence in India's motorcycle segment and its role in establishing IYM as an export hub for Yamaha's products.

Since entering India in 1985, Yamaha's market position has evolved significantly. The company dominated the performance motorcycle segment in the late 1980s and early 1990s with models like the RX100, which sold over 1.6 million units.

However, the mid-1990s shift towards fuel-efficient commuter motorcycles led to a decline in Yamaha's market share as competitors Hero Honda and Bajaj Auto captured the mass market. Currently, Yamaha holds around 4 percent of India's two-wheeler market share, focusing on the premium segment. This is a decrease from its peak of 15 percent in the early 1990s.

The company has repositioned itself in the premium motorcycle and scooter segments, competing with manufacturers like KTM and Honda in the performance category while maintaining a limited presence in the mass-market segment dominated by Hero MotoCorp and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India.

The R series is Yamaha's global performance motorcycle line-up, starting from the entry-level R15 to the flagship R1. The R15 is the introductory model, especially significant in emerging markets like India, where larger displacement motorcycles face cost and licensing restrictions.

The model shares design elements with its larger counterparts while providing accessible performance. The R15's success in India differs from other markets where larger R series models, such as the R3 and R6, are more prominent. This makes the R15 a strategic product for Yamaha in markets where sub-200cc motorcycles are considered the premium segment.
