Triumph Tiger 900 launched from Rs 13.7 lakh

Triumph has launched the new Tiger 900 in India in three variants – GT (Rs 13.7 lakh), Rally (Rs 14.35 lakh) and the top-spec Rally Pro (Rs 15.5 lakh) – and the brand’s dealerships across the country are now officially accepting bookings. The bike was supposed to go on sale earlier this year, however, the COVID-19 pandemic and the global lockdowns that followed led to the delay.

Engine and chassis

The Tiger 900 is a completely new motorcycle that replaces the highly popular Tiger 800. The road-biased version is badged the GT while the off-road biased version is called the Rally. Both bikes share the same bodywork, chassis, bolt-on subframe, and a new 888cc three-cylinder engine. The motor produces 94hp and 87Nm of torque and features a unique 1-3-2 firing order that gives it an entirely different character compared to the previous model. Variants explained

One of the major differences is in the suspension. The GT features a 45mm USD fork with compression and rebound damping, and a rear monoshock with preload and rebound adjustability. The bike offers 180mm of wheel travel at the front and 170mm at the rear. The Rally and Rally Pro get their suspension hardware from Showa with a fully adjustable 45mm USD fork and monoshock, offering 240mm and 230mm of wheel travel, respectively. The entire Tiger 900 range also features top-end Brembo Stylema brakes with four-piston calipers and 320mm discs at the front, and a single-piston caliper with a 255mm disc at the back.

In terms of electronics, the GT and Rally come with Rain, Road, Sport and Off-Road riding modes, while the top-spec Rally Pro offers additional Rider-configurable and Off-Road Pro modes. The Rally Pro also comes equipped with LED fog lamps, heated rider and pillion seats, My Triumph connectivity system, bi-directional quickshifter and tyre pressure monitoring system.

All three variants launched in India share the same 7.0-inch TFT instrument screen, IMU-based cornering ABS and traction control, along with a 20-litre fuel tank.

Pricing and competition

For reference, prices of the Tiger 800 variants ranged between Rs 11.99 lakh for the Tiger 800 XR and went up to Rs 15.16 lakh for the top-of-the-line Tiger 800 XCa. In terms of competition, the Tiger 900 GT will rival the new F 900 XR, which costs Rs 10.50 lakh. On the other hand, the Rally and Rally Pro versions will rival the Honda CRF1100L Africa Twin Adventure Sports, prices for which start at Rs 15.35 lakh.
