We are looking to replace our 2004 Maruti Suzuki Baleno sedan which has done close to 2 lakh km. Out budget is Rs 10-11 lakh, and the requirements are value for money, comfort, fuel efficiency and low maintenance. Also, it should be an automatic. We either go for the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga auto, Baleno CVT or wait for the S-cross petrol auto. Though these cars belong to different segments, which would be a better buy? Currently, we also own a 2012 Ertiga diesel that has already done 1.60 lakh km.

AAA Since you have used an old Baleno for over 12 years, you will be used to the passenger room and luggage space a sedan offers; so it’s best you continue with a car that offers you the same. The S-cross would have been a logical upgrade but it doesn’t come with a petrol motor or an automatic gearbox. We suggest you stretch your budget and go in for the Maruti Ciaz automatic which has lots of space, a comfortable ride and a smooth engine. It’s not the most fuel efficient though, but being a Maruti it should be reliable and give you trouble-free service.

The original car is stripped down to its shell.

Armour is then welded on from the bottom up, starting with the quarter panels and the floor.

An exit hatch is put into the rear before the upholstery and glass is replaced.

Spot the difference: the finished fully-armoured Fortuner (L) looks identical to the regular SUV (R).

At highest level of protection, the glass can withstand fire from a sniper rifle.

Run flats can carry the car 60km away if the wheel deflates.

Exhaust pipe cover a small but vital security detail.

Stock hinges are replaced to deal with the added weight of armoured doors.

900kg of additional weightcalls for beefed-up suspension.

Protective shell around fuel tank is defense against IED and grenade attacks.

Armour is tested to withstand 350 rounds from an AK47.

Standard tyres are swapped for run flats. The rims also get a composite ring to keep you moving, should the tyres completely deflate.
