The Punch sits in the subcompact SUV space, while the Fronx is positioned higher as a compact SUV.

The Tata Punch and Maruti Fronx are popular choices in the subcompact and compact SUV segments, respectively, and while both models offer turbo-petrol powertrains, they differ widely in specifications. Their feature lists and ex-showroom prices also vary. Although they are not direct rivals, this feature looks at how the top trims of the Tata and Maruti SUVs stack up on paper across the above-mentioned parameters.

The Punch’s relatively larger three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine makes 20hp and 22Nm more than the Fronx, giving it a slightly quicker claimed 0-100kph sprint time. Also, peak torque is available from as low as 1750rpm on the Punch, while the Fronx offers it from 2000rpm. However, the Maruti SUV claws back some ground with an automatic gearbox option.

Despite sitting a segment lower, the Tata Punch is impressively well-kitted, and it underlines how carmakers are pushing to load feature lists even in smaller segments. In fact, the Punch pulls ahead with a sunroof, larger touchscreen, digital driver's display, more tweeters, a rear centre armrest and a factory-fitted TPMS unit. The Fronx, however, counters only with a head-up display and 60:40 split folding rear seats.

Tata Punch vs Maruti Fronx turbo trims: Prices and verdict

Top-spec Punch turbo MT costs Rs 76,000 less than Fronx equivalent

Automatic (in Rs, lakh)Not available11.84

Between the top-spec Punch Accomplished+ S and Fronx Alpha turbo manual trims, our pick is the latter. For just Rs 76,000 more, you get an SUV with a larger footprint (overall), and this translates into more interior space. Yes, it misses out on feel-good features such as a sunroof and a digital driver’s display, but neither is a deal-breaker in everyday use.

The Fronx is down on power and torque, but in our review we found its Boosterjet engine to be pleasantly responsive at low speeds, with minimal turbo lag. As for the Tata SUV, on the move the engine feels eager, responding quickly to throttle inputs and pulling strongly well into triple-digit speeds. Power delivery remains fairly linear throughout.

Fronx stands out with AT choice

As mentioned earlier, it has a key advantage in the form of a proper torque converter automatic gearbox, a convenience the Punch doesn’t offer at all. And while Tata is yet to announce mileage figures for the Punch turbo, the Fronx delivers claimed efficiencies of 21.5kpl with the manual and 20.01kpl with the automatic.
