Questions you may find useful

I am considering buying my first four-wheeler, and my budget is under Rs. 10 lakh. My requirement is mainly city driving, with occasional visits to villages and a few trips each year. Please suggest a family car or SUV that is practical for family use while also catering to occasional trips and village driving. I have explored the Tata Punch, Hyundai Exter, Tata Nexon, Maruti Suzuki Wagon R, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Renault Kiger, and Renault Kwid, and now I feel confused about which one to buy. Kindly help me with my dilemma.

For your requirements, from your shortlist, the Renault Kiger is the most sensible choice. Your usage is predominantly city driving with occasional village visits and a few trips a year, which means you need a car that is compact and easy to drive in the city, but also robust enough to handle rough roads and occasional bad patches. As you plan to travel with your family too, space is also important, as well as boot volume for luggage. The Kiger strikes that balance very well. It offers a higher ground clearance than hatchbacks like the Wagon R, which makes it more confidence-inspiring on broken village roads, and its compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre and park in the city. It also offers more space than most of the other options in this price range. You also get a choice of naturally aspirated and turbocharged petrol engines, and given that you travel with family and do occasional long drives, we recommend the turbo petrol, which has some additional punch, yet can be fuel efficient when driven carefully. The Wagon R, Exter and Punch are a size down on the Kiger and thus won't be as suitable for your family, while the Nexon and Fronx will require you to settle for a low variant in your budget. The Renault Kiger is the best value for money you can get at this price, and alternatively, for a similar price, you can also look at its sister car - the Nissan Magnite.

Being 6 feet tall person with a budget within Rs. 10 lakh, I mostly commute in the city but also ride around 200 km on the highway every week. My priorities are reliability, after-sales service, fuel efficiency, and riding comfort. Which one should I choose between the Maruti Suzuki Fronx NA Petrol and the Tata Punch NA Petrol?

Verified
6w

Go for the Fronx NA petrol, mainly for its smoother 4-cylinder engine and better efficiency, which will save you money in city traffic and feel calmer on your 200 km weekly highway run. Maruti’s reliability and service reach are still the easiest to live with, especially if you plan to keep the car long. For a 6ft driver the seat travel is good, cabin is wider than the Punch, and the Fronx feels more relaxed at 90-100 km/h with less engine noise. The Punch fights back with a higher driving position and a tougher, more absorbent ride on bad roads. But its 3-cylinder motor is noisier, needs more effort for highway overtakes, and real-world fuel use is usually higher. Tata’s service is improving but still inconsistent in many cities. If reliability, low running costs and everyday comfort matter most, the Fronx fits your brief better.

I want to buy my first new car. My budget is under 10 lacs. So please suggest to me that Tata Punch, Tata Tiago, Suzuki Fronx and Hyundai Exter, which is best?

Verified
7w

Go for the Hyundai Exter, because as a first car under Rs. 10 lakh, it is the easiest to live with and gives you the most useful kit in the budget. The high driving position and light controls of this Hyundai car make city driving and parking stress-free, and you can get a well-equipped trim with safety features without overshooting your budget. Hyundai’s wide service network also helps when you are new to ownership. One honest catch is that the engine feels just okay on fast highways, so it is happier at city and ring road speeds than flat-out cruising. If you deal with broken roads or rough rural patches often, the Tata Punch feels tougher and rides bad roads better, but its engine is noisier. And, the Tata Punch price starts from Rs. 6.19 and goes up to Rs. 12.16 (ex-showroom), which is a little above your budget. The Maruti Suzuki Fronx is roomier and very easy to drive, but the good trims push the budget, and the base ones feel bare. The Tata Tiago is a smaller hatch and not as airy as the Exter.

Which automatic cars with good comfort and practical, no-nonsense features would you recommend for 95% city driving? My budget is around Rs. 12 lakh. The options I am considering are Citroen C3X, Tata Punch, Nissan Magnite, Maruti Suzuki Fronx, Toyota Taisor, Skoda Kylaq and Hyundai Exter. I particularly miss the Honda Jazz CVT, as it would have made my decision much easier. Is there any possibility of the Honda Jazz making a comeback in the Indian market?

The Citroen C3 fits your requirement of comfort and no nonsense features very well. Space inside this automatic car is good and the suspension is tuned to provide excellent ride comfort even over bad and broken city roads. The C3 is also not loaded with features but its covers all of todays essential requirements very well and will come in under your budget. The C3 also has a torque convertor automatic gearbox which is the smoothest type of autobox to have, so given that nearly all you driving is within the city, this is something you will appreciate. The only issue with Citroen is the dealer network is very sparse, so only go ahead if you have a reputed dealer in your area. An alternative would be the Skoda Kylaq, at your budget you would get the lower trims but since you are not chasing fancy features this should do well. Like the C3, the Kylaq too has a torque convertor gearbox so it will be smooth and easy in city traffic. About the Jazz CVT - there’s no official plan to bring it back to India. If they do a new small Honda car, it is not around the corner, so don’t wait.

I am looking for a family car and am currently confused between the Tata Punch Accomplished AMT, Maruti Fronx Delta Plus AMT, and Hyundai Exter HX6 AMT. Could you please help me choose the best option?

Verified

It's really hard to suggest a car without knowing a bit more about your requirements, like rear space requirements and the distance driven per month. Thus, as a good all-rounder for a small family, the Maruti Suzuki Fronx Delta Plus AMT fits your brief best. Pick this variant because it gives you the most rear-seat space and a bigger, more useful boot than the other two, so adults sit more comfortably, and you pack more for trips. It also feels light and easy to drive in traffic, and the ride is calm over rough roads, which helps passengers, especially elders or kids. Two things to note: this automatic can feel a bit slow to pick up when you press the accelerator hard, and you will miss a few fancy features that sit on higher trims. If you drive with a full load on steep hills often, you may want to try it once to see if the response suits you.If you value tough build and the best ride on broken roads above all else, the Tata Punch Accomplished AMT is the second choice. It also has a smaller footprint for tight parking and a feature-rich cabin at a price like the Hyundai Exter HX6 AMT, too. Overall, for family comfort and everyday ease, go with the Fronx Delta Plus AMT.
