Features such as ventilated seats and front parking sensors, once seen on high-end cars, have now made their way to affordable, mass-market models. A powered tailgate is another such feature, now offered mostly on the top-tier variants of some Maruti, Tata, MG and Renault cars. It is worth noting that a powered tailgate isn’t the same as an electric tailgate release, which only unlocks the boot, while the tailgate still has to be lifted and closed manually. With that out of the way, here are the five most affordable cars that come with a powered tailgate in India.

5. MG Hector | Hector Plus
Price: Rs 19.19 lakh | Rs 19.69 lakh
Both the MG Hector 5-seater SUV and the Hector Plus (6- and 7-seater versions) offer the gesture-controlled boot-opening functionality. The feature can only be had in the top Savvy Pro trim in both models, currently offered with a 143hp, 250Nm turbo-petrol engine. MG has yet to announce pricing for the SUVs’ diesel range and the 6-seater version of the Hector Plus.

4. MG Windsor EV
Price: Rs 18.5 lakh
Next in line is the MG Windsor EV, the only non-SUV model in this set. The Windsor’s central touchscreen lets you choose how wide the tailgate opens, which can be useful when in tight parking spaces. Just the 136hp Windsor EV Essence Pro with a 52.9kWh battery pack comes with the feature.

3. Tata Curvv
Price: Rs 17.25 lakh-Rs 19.10 lakh
The Tata Curvv features a gesture-controlled powered tailgate in its top variant, and it stands out here as the only coupe SUV. The Curvv Accomplished+ A and its Dark edition can be optioned with a 125hp 1.2-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine or a 118hp 1.5-litre diesel unit.

2. Maruti Victoris
Price: Rs 13.57 lakh-Rs 19.99 lakh
Like most SUVs here, the Maruti Suzuki Victoris gets a gesture-controlled tailgate in its range-topping trims. These include the Victoris ZXI, ZXI (O), ZXI+ and ZXI+ (O), which offer several 1.5-litre engine choices: a 103hp mild-hybrid petrol (FWD/AWD), a 116hp strong hybrid and an 88hp petrol-CNG (with an underbody tank to free up boot space). Do note that Maruti has not yet disclosed the Victoris’s boot capacity figures by powertrain.
1. Renault Duster
Price: Rs 13.49 lakh-Rs 18.69 lakh
The Renault Duster is currently the most affordable model here to offer a powered tailgate and also the newest entrant. What sets it apart is that this convenience feature is available from the mid-spec Techno variant itself. The Duster Techno can be had with either a 100hp 1-litre turbo-petrol or a 163hp 1.3-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine. Boot space is rated at a segment-best 518 litres up to the parcel shelf and extends to 700 litres when measured up to the roof.
