Currently, I’ve been driving a Honda Jazz CVT Petrol for the past 7 years. The car has been absolutely fine, and I still enjoy the drive. However, I’m now looking to upgrade to an SUV. My mandatory requirements are ADAS, a panoramic sunroof, and a petrol automatic. My usage is mostly highway runs, with some weekend city driving, and my yearly running is around 10,000 km. Budget is up to 23 lakhs. I had shortlisted the Hyundai Alcazar 7-Seater Signature DCT (we are a family of 3, but extended family visits occasionally, so exploring the 7-seater option). However, with the current E20 fuel and upcoming E27/E30 norms, I’m confused whether to buy now or wait for a few months. Would appreciate suggestions on good options.

Pick the Hyundai Creta 1.5 turbo DCT SX(O). It gives you Level 2 ADAS features, a big panoramic sunroof and feels nice to drive on long highway runs. It will likely sit closer to your Rs. 23 lakh cap than the Alcazar, which usually crosses it. If you truly need the third row a few times a year, the Alcazar DCT also works well, and it gets all the features you're looking for, but the last row is best reserved for short durations.

About fuel, don’t overthink it. Hyundai’s current 1.5 turbo petrol is E20-ready and runs fine on today’s fuel. E27 or E30 is not around the corner yet, and buying now will not put you at a disadvantage in a few months.

@autocar.india Thank you for the suggestion. Creta looks good from all aspects. The only point of considering Alcazar is because of two additional seats which will be used when parent visits us or we visit to our hometown. Considering other 7 seater petrol SUV in the market, I explored MG hector plus petrol top model as well as Tata Safari Adventure X Plus..Both are near to 23 lakhs budget but MG's relaibility and Tata's after sales service is pushing me towards Alcazar though I need to stretch my budget to 25 lakhs for that. What is your opinion on that?

Hey Folks, I have a 2017 Feb Hyundai Creta SX Petrol, just driven 35k kms. The car is well maintained with consistent yearly servicing at Hyundai. Now, I am thinking that it's now 9.5 years old; how confidently can I stiil go on road trips, needing me to drive the vehicle for 1800 kms in 2 days? Regardless, should I also consider the current E20 uncertainty & go for new car?

If your 2017 Hyundai Creta SX petrol has been consistently serviced at Hyundai and is running well, there is no reason you cannot confidently take it on an 1,800km road trip. Modern cars are designed to last well beyond 10 years with proper maintenance, and 35,000km is a very low mileage for a 9.5-year-old car. The key is to ensure the car is in good health: get a thorough pre-trip check-up, replace any ageing rubber components, check fluids, tyres and brakes, and you should be good to go. Be mindful of where you refuel, and stick to well-maintained fuel stations that see high customer turnover.On the E20 question, there is no need to replace a well-maintained car purely because of ethanol. Your Creta is likely E10-compliant, and should safely run on E20, albeit with a drop in fuel efficiency.The only reason to change would be if you are already feeling the itch for a new car or want a significant upgrade in safety, features or performance. Otherwise, keep the Creta, enjoy the road trip and revisit the replacement decision when the car genuinely starts to show its age.

I want to buy the new Renault Duster 1.3 Turbo DCT. Is it a good choice, considering my usage is mostly city driving with an average monthly running of around 800-900 km? I am also considering the Hyundai Creta. Between the Duster and the Creta, which one would you recommend for my requirements?

The Renault Duster 1.3 turbo DCT is a good car, with its biggest strength being its ride quality and handling. It feels planted on bad roads, absorbs bumps well and is genuinely enjoyable to drive. The 1.3 turbo petrol is punchy, and the DCT is quick, which makes it fun on open roads. But for your running of 800-900 km a month, mainly in the city, the 1.3 turbo-DCT isn't going to be very efficient.In comparison, the Hyundai Creta is more suited to your needs. Its interior feels airier and brighter, and overall it is a proven product with a stronger ownership track record. Sure, the Duster is the better driver’s car and feels more robust on rough roads, but the Creta will be more fuel efficient and is a better urban SUV, especially in its 1.5 Petrol IVT avatar, which is smooth and very seamless. A new Creta is expected to be launched early next year, so if you can wait, that could be worth getting.

Hi, I’m planning to buy an SUV under Rs 25 lakh. I’m considering the Nissan Tekton and the Hyundai Creta. However, since I can wait another 3-6 months, is it a good idea to wait for the next-generation Hyundai Creta before taking a decision? I’m looking at the Creta IVT option and am not interested in a strong hybrid.

If you can wait 3-6 months, it is worth waiting for the next-generation Hyundai Creta. Hyundai is expected to launch the all-new Creta in 2027, and it will be a completely new car on a new platform, not just a facelift. The current Creta is still a strong product, but it is nearing the end of its lifecycle, and the new model will likely bring significant improvements in design, technology and overall ownership experience.The Nissan Tekton is a good alternative and is a very good drivers car, so its a good buy if driving pleasure is high on your list. The new Creta is likely to be more of a relaxed commuter. Thus, if you can wait, it makes sense to see what the next-generation Creta has to offer before making a decision.

Go for the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI Sport. Coming from a Polo and Vento automatic, you already appreciate Volkswagen’s driving DNA, and the Taigun 1.5 TSI is a natural progression. The engine is punchy, the DSG gearbox is quick and engaging, and the overall driving experience is far more involving than the Seltos. The Taigun also feels more compact and agile in the city, while still being comfortable on the highway. The Volkswagen Taigun mileage is 19.54 kpl for the 1.0 TSI AT, 19.98 kpl for the 1.0 TSI MT, and 18.85 kpl for the 1.5 TSI DCT.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. The diesel engine is efficient and torquey, but it lacks the excitement of the 1.5 TSI. I am looking to buy an electric car in the Rs. 20-30 lakh price range. My driving is mostly within the city, with an annual running of only 5,000-7,000 km. Would you recommend buying an EV now, or would it be better to wait for the newer models that are expected to launch over the next few months?

With 5,000-7,000 km a year and mostly city driving, you are the ideal EV buyer. The Mahindra XEV 9S in its top-spec Pack Three guise will comfortably fit in your budget. With a 79kWh battery pack, you can easily expect a real-world range of around 480km in daily driving conditions. The 9S is also a full-size SUV with three rows, so practicality is excellent. There is a usable frunk as well, and the feature list is extensive with connected tech, panoramic sunroof, front and rear ventilated seats, drive modes, Level 2 ADAS and much more. Also, with 286hp, the 9S has plenty of performance for everyday needs. The overall package strikes a good balance and hence is our recommendation.
