Hi, My name is Praveen Kumar. I am a little confused about buying an EV for my daily commute. I travel around 50-80 km every day, and my budget is around Rs. 15-20 lakh. Should I go for a diesel automatic or an EV? If I choose an EV, which one should I buy? Can I consider the Syros EV? Also, please shed some light on battery degradation and its impact on long-term ownership.

With a daily commute of 50–80km and a budget of Rs 15-20 lakh, an EV is a very sensible choice, provided you have access to home charging. At this level of usage, the running cost savings over a diesel can be significant, and you will not need to charge every day. Battery degradation is also not a major concern with modern EVs. Most manufacturers offer an 8-year warranty on the battery, and available real-world data suggests that degradation is typically in the range of 10-15 percent over that period, depending on usage and charging habits.

The Kia Syros EV is a good option within your budget. This Kia car offers a spacious, premium cabin and a well-rounded ownership experience. If you are looking for alternatives, the Maruti Suzuki e Vitara is worth considering as well. It offers similar range and performance, while Maruti’s extensive service reach is a big advantage.

A diesel makes sense if you cannot install a home charger and most of your commute is on the highway. In that case, look at the Kia Seltos diesel automatic. If your commute is largely in the city and home charging is not an option, then a hybrid like the Victoris is a better fit.

My wife (5'0") and I are buying an automatic car primarily for city commutes with occasional highway trips. We are considering the Kia Seltos. Is it a good choice specifically regarding seating ergonomics and visibility for a 5-foot tall driver?

The Kia Seltos is a good all-rounder, but for a 5-foot-tall driver, it is not the easiest car to live with. The seat height adjustment is limited, and the bonnet is relatively high, which can make judging the front of the car difficult. The A-pillars are also quite thick, which can create blind spots at junctions. The Seltos is also a larger car than you really need for city commutes, which makes parking and manoeuvring in tight spaces more challenging.A better option would be the Kia Syros. It has a higher seating postion, lower bonnet line, better all-round visibility and a more compact footprint, which makes it much easier to drive and park in the city. The seat height adjustment is also more accommodating for shorter drivers. The Syros is also a very comfortable and reliable car with low running costs, which makes it a great long-term ownership proposition.

I am looking for a mid-size SUV in the Rs 15-16 lakh range. I have narrowed my list down to the new Duster 1.3 Turbo Techno+ and the Hyundai Creta 1.5 NA S(O). I really like the Creta's interior, but I am concerned that since Kia has already launched the new-generation Seltos, the new-generation Creta may not be far away. My daily running is approximately 80km, mostly on the highway, with some city driving. Please suggest which would be the better buy.

I am planning to buy a sub-compact SUV. My budget is Rs. 13-14 lakh, and my priorities are a smooth automatic transmission and good mileage. I am considering the Brezza ZXi AT, Sonet HXT DCT, and Venue HX6 DCT. I am very confused because the Brezza’s torque-converter automatic offers good fuel efficiency but lacks some features, while the Sonet and Venue offer all the features I need. However, I am concerned that the DCT may be less fuel-efficient and could involve higher maintenance costs. My daily commute is around 30 km, mostly in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. Please suggest which one would be the best choice for my requirements.

Go for the Maruti Suzuki Brezza ZXI AT. Your priorities are a smooth automatic, good fuel efficiency and a daily 30km commute in heavy bumper-to-bumper traffic. Go for the Hyundai Venue. With your daily 35km commute in Delhi NCR traffic, comfort and low maintenance are key, and the Venue delivers on both. The 1.2 NA petrol is smooth, refined and easy to drive in stop-start conditions, while Hyundai’s service network and ownership experience are among the best in the segment. The HX6T variant also gives you a good balance of features without pushing the budget too far.The Sonet HTK+O is mechanically very similar, but the Venue is a newer model and offers a more spacious cabin.
