My monthly running is approximately 1,200 km, mostly within the Delhi-NCR region. My family includes my wife, my 11-year-old son, and my mother. I had to sell my beautifully maintained third-generation Honda City V MT because of the 15-year NGT rule in Delhi. In October 2024, I bought a Tata Punch EV S Long Range, which has proven to be tech-loaded, extremely economical to run, comfortable, and very convenient for navigating Delhi's congested roads. However, I still miss having an all-rounder with the character of the third-generation City, especially on highway drives. I have shortlisted two options: the Maruti Suzuki Swift MT and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT. I enjoy driving briskly, while staying within legal limits, on highways, which is why the Swift appeals to me. At the same time, my heart is set on Jimny for its classic looks and abilities. I plan to undertake long road trips to destinations such as Keran in Kashmir, Leh-Ladakh, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of the country. Considering my current usage, I may keep just one car in the garage, although I am also open to owning both an EV for city driving and an ICE car for highway trips. With this in mind, I would appreciate your expert advice on the best long-term choice.

Given your usage and aspirations, the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT is the better fit. Your monthly running of 1,200 km in Delhi-NCR is well within petrol territory, and your intent to do long road trips to places like Leh and Arunachal points towards a car with capability rather than outright speed. The Swift is a fantastic highway car, but it is ultimately a hatchback and will not give you the sense of adventure or the ability to tackle rough terrain that the Jimny offers. The Jimny, on the other hand, is a purpose-built off-roader with a classic appeal, and it will allow you to explore the kind of destinations you have in mind with confidence. It is not the fastest car on the highway, nor is it spacious, but it is comfortable enough and excels when the going gets tough. Since you already have the Tata Punch EV for city duties, the Jimny can be your dedicated adventure vehicle, and you do not need to compromise by keeping only one car. The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna is a sensible upgrade from the Alto 800. It offers a more refined engine, better ride comfort, a more spacious cabin and a generally more premium ownership experience, while still being easy to drive and inexpensive to maintain. For a 30 km daily commute, it strikes a good balance between comfort and efficiency.However, given your priorities of reliability, fuel efficiency and low running costs, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is worth serious consideration. It is more fuel efficient than the Grand i10 Nios, has lower maintenance costs, and Maruti’s service network remains the most extensive in the country. In its VXI guise, you only miss out on rear AC vents compared to the Grand i10, but it is a much nicer car to drive and has better ride comfort and rear seat space.The clutch is light, you get a reversing camera, it is fun to drive and a lot more efficient as well, making it a better choice than the Grand i10.

At Rs 8-10 lakh, there are no hybrid cars available in India. The only options in this price range are mild hybrids, which offer a small efficiency boost but do not provide the fuel savings or electric-only driving of a proper strong hybrid system. If you are specifically looking for a hybrid with a sunroof, you will need to increase your budget to around Rs 20 lakh or more, where cars like the Maruti Suzuki Victoris Hybrid, Grand Vitara Hybrid and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder Hybrid become available. These are proper strong hybrids and are among the most efficient cars in India today.If your budget is fixed at Rs 8-10 lakh, the best approach is to focus on a good mild hybrid car with a sunroof, such as the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Brezza. If space is not the highest priority, get the Fronx, as it is better value for money, giving you more features for your money. The Brezza, however, has more interior space, more powerful engines and a 5-star Bharat NCAP crash test rating, so it could be the better choice.But then your other requirement - a sunroof - will not be met by either of these, as Maruti only offers this feature in higher variants. So if that is of the highest priority, check out a petrol car like the Hyundai i20, Tata Punch or Kia Sonet. The choice really comes down to your usage and what you value in the car. If you need more space for both passengers and luggage and have a few long drives that you would undertake, then opt for the Tata Sierra. This Tata car is much larger and has a very spacious interior. The ride quality is also very good over both bad city roads as well as high highway speeds. If, however, your usage is mainly going to be within the city, then the Kia Syros is the better buy. Its compact footprint will be much easier to manage while driving congested streets, and finding parking would be easier. You would also enjoy the top variant of the Kia car and its features.

I am confused between Taigun 1.5 Sport and Seltos Diesel X-Line top model. I have owned the Polo AT and Vento AT in the past, so my love for Volkswagen is making this decision difficult.

Go for the Volkswagen Taigun 1.5 TSI Sport. Coming from a Polo and Vento automatic, you already appreciate Volkswagen’s driving DNA, and the Taigun 1.5 TSI is a natural progression. The Taigun also feels more compact and agile in the city, while still being comfortable on the highway.The Kia Seltos diesel X-Line is a strong all-rounder with better space, a more premium cabin and a more relaxed long-distance character, but it does not offer the same level of driver engagement. The diesel engine is efficient and torquey, but it lacks the excitement of the 1.5 TSI. Given your history with Volkswagen cars, the Taigun will simply feel more familiar and more enjoyable to drive every day.
