My monthly running is approximately 1,200 km, mostly within the Delhi-NCR region. My family includes my wife, my 11-year-old son, and my mother. I had to sell my beautifully maintained third-generation Honda City V MT because of the 15-year NGT rule in Delhi. In October 2024, I bought a Tata Punch EV S Long Range, which has proven to be tech-loaded, extremely economical to run, comfortable, and very convenient for navigating Delhi's congested roads. However, I still miss having an all-rounder with the character of the third-generation City, especially on highway drives. I have shortlisted two options: the Maruti Suzuki Swift MT and the Maruti Suzuki Jimny AT. I enjoy driving briskly, while staying within legal limits, on highways, which is why the Swift appeals to me. At the same time, my heart is set on Jimny for its classic looks and abilities. I plan to undertake long road trips to destinations such as Keran in Kashmir, Leh-Ladakh, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, and other parts of the country. Considering my current usage, I may keep just one car in the garage, although I am also open to owning both an EV for city driving and an ICE car for highway trips. With this in mind, I would appreciate your expert advice on the best long-term choice.

The Hyundai Grand i10 Nios Magna is a sensible upgrade from the Alto 800. It offers a more refined engine, better ride comfort, a more spacious cabin and a generally more premium ownership experience, while still being easy to drive and inexpensive to maintain. For a 30 km daily commute, it strikes a good balance between comfort and efficiency.However, given your priorities of reliability, fuel efficiency and low running costs, the Maruti Suzuki Swift is worth serious consideration. It is more fuel efficient than the Grand i10 Nios, has lower maintenance costs, and Maruti’s service network remains the most extensive in the country. In its VXI guise, you only miss out on rear AC vents compared to the Grand i10, but it is a much nicer car to drive and has better ride comfort and rear seat space.The clutch is light, you get a reversing camera, it is fun to drive and a lot more efficient as well, making it a better choice than the Grand i10.

This Tata car is one of the most affordable EVs in the market, and with a 40km daily commute, the running cost savings over petrol will add up quickly. The car is also compact and easy to drive in city traffic, while still offering a comfortable ride and a decent feature set.The only thing to consider is your long-term usage pattern. If your commute is mostly city driving and you have reliable charging at home, the Punch EV makes a lot of sense. However, if you expect to do frequent long-distance highway trips, you will need to plan charging stops, and the Punch EV's range will require a bit more planning compared to larger EVs.Overall, given your budget, usage and charging situation, the Punch EV Empowered is a strong recommendation. The Tata Punch EV is a great value proposition, but at 6'4", you are already experiencing its biggest limitation: cabin space. The driving position in this Tata car is upright, and the seat does not go low enough, which can become uncomfortable on longer drives. Since you are willing to stretch your budget, the MG Windsor EV is the better fit. It offers a significantly more spacious cabin, a wider and more comfortable seat, and a more relaxed driving position. Range is one aspect where this MG car doesn't really hit the 350km mark. Around 300km is what you can expect in normal driving conditions. Highway trips will have to be planned well. The screen inside dominates the dashboard. It is a more premium product than the Punch EV, but the extra spend is justified by the comfort and space.The other option is the new Kia Syros EV. It might seem compact, but the interior is surprisingly spacious, even for tall adults. The battery is a 51.4kWh unit from the bigger Clavis EV, so 400km in one charge should be possible. The rear seat space is also excellent, and the quality of the cabin, along with the usability of day-to-day functions, makes it a very strong contender.
