I need a good car for local runs as a second car under Rs 5 lacs on-road. Please suggest one.

Asked by: Mayank Y

At a target on-road price of under 5 lakh, you could look at the Maruti Suzuki's Alto K10 or the S-Presso. With some good deals from the dealer, the lower variant of the Renault Kwid, the Kwid RxE, could also fit the budget. We would recommend you avoid the S-Presso and choose between the K10 and the Kwid.

Alternatively, you can greatly expand your options by looking at the used car market. Today, there are organised players like Spinny, for example, that have on offer certified cars with warranties too. If you are looking at the pre-owned space, then a Hyundai Grand i10 or even older models of the Maruti Suzuki Baleno will do nicely.

I am looking forward to the Citroen C3 Aircross, but am a little concerned regarding its mileage. As one of my friends said, the average of turbocharged engines is very low. They will give an average of only 10 kmpl. Is this true? What is the real-world mileage of the Citroen C3 Aircross?

The Citroen Aircross has a turbo petrol engine, so relatively lower mileage is not surprising. In our tests, the Aircross returned around 9.5 kmpl in city conditions for both the manual and automatic variants. For reference, the Kia Sonet, which is similarly priced but smaller in size, returned around 11.5 kmpl in the city, giving it an advantage of almost 2 kmpl in efficiency. The main reason for that is the Aircross’s larger size and weight. That said, since our efficiency test was carried out in Mumbai, in cities with more free-flowing traffic, you can expect a bit more mileage from the Aircross.

Hi Autocar India, after test drives of vehicles ranging from the Amaze CVT to the 7XO base variant, I seem to have two options to choose from: Mahindra 3XO AX5 AT and Kia Carens Clavis NA HTE(O) MT. My usage is 90% Tier 2 city and 10% highways. I have two 3-year-old kids, along with my spouse and parents. The Carens Clavis seems to satisfy the family requirements, while I prefer the torquey engine and AT of the 3XO. Should I go ahead and buy the 3XO for the time being and move to a 7-seater a few years down the line, considering crash safety?

We would strongly suggest opting for a 7-seater. Having a safe car but carrying six persons in a 5-seater is equally, or even more, unsafe. We recommend the Kia Carens Clavis, as it meets your space requirements. In the Clavis, you have enough room to mount two child seats (highly recommended for child safety) along with four adults, ensuring good comfort. The ride quality is also comfortable, and it is a large, practical car.Yes, the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine doesn’t have the punch of the 3XO’s turbo petrol engine, and if that is something you are after, then we would recommend stretching and going for the base variant of the Mahindra XUV 7XO. It is a 7-seater, although the third row is not as comfortable as the Clavis, but it is good enough for children, and the turbo petrol engine is powerful and has effortless performance.

I want to purchase a second car for my wife. I commute long distances daily, up to 120-130 km, 3-4 days a week. I am looking for a budget-friendly automatic suitable for both city and highway use. Which model would be suitable?

The Hyundai Venue is a good option for your requirements. It is a spacious and comfortable SUV that is easy to drive in the city and on the highway. This Hyundai car is packed with features and tech, and the cabin feels upmarket and well-built too. The 1.0-litre turbo-petrol DCT powertrain engine is peppy and suitable for your daily commute. However, given your wife's intended long-range use of 120km plus, 3-4 days a week, we would recommend the 1.5 diesel AT. The engine is refined, and the gearbox is smooth, making it an excellent city commuter. Fuel efficiency will also be much better than the turbo petrol option.

I have a Kia Carens diesel automatic and an older 2011 Honda City. My native place is Bhopal, but I am currently working in Maharashtra. Due to limited parking space at my rented house, I cannot keep the Kia Carens with me, so I am using my old 2011 manual Honda City. I am a 57-year-old fit person, and I like to drive. On the highway, my normal speed is 80-120 km/h, according to permissible limits. The Honda City is still excellent to drive, but covering long distances in it is very tiring compared to the Kia Carens. Please advise me on a sub-4-metre automatic SUV that is comfortable for long-distance highway travel. I usually travel approximately 600 km in a single run. My budget is Rs 12 to 13 lakh. Safety, decent mileage, and easy ingress and egress are my priorities. One vehicle that comes to mind is the Skoda Kylaq. Please suggest a vehicle that could be even more comfortable than the Kia Carens on long distances.

Yes, you're right, the Skoda Kylaq is an excellent choice that fits your needs well. Apart from being comfortable and stable out on the highway, its 1.0 TSI engine has a lot of punch, and its 6-speed AT gearbox is very smooth. Mileage is decent, too, if driven carefully, and ingress and egress are quite easy. However, you should also consider the Mahindra XUV 3XO, which has more powerful engines and an able chassis, since you like to drive. It is slightly more comfortable than the Kylaq, which can feel a bit stiff, and since you do such long distances, unlike the Kylaq, it offers a strong but efficient diesel engine option, which will reduce the running costs slightly.
