Jorge Martin took a dominant lights-to-flag win at the Indonesian GP, in a chaotic race that saw just 12 riders make it to the chequered flag. Pedro Acosta held on to second place, while Martin’s title rival Francesco Bagnaia finished third after a late charge.

Jorge Martin wins Indonesian GP

Sunday’s race saw Martin finally make amends at Mandalika. The Pramac rider had crashed out of the race in 2022 and 2023, and his string of bad luck only continued in this weekend’s sprint race where he once again crashed out of the lead. This allowed Bagnaia to halve Martin’s championship lead from 24 to 12 points.

But Sunday was a new day. The race kicked off on a dramatic note with Jack Miller, Alex Marquez, Aleix Espargaro and Luca Marini crashing out at Turn 3. But out at front, Martin held on to the lead from pole position. With Bagnaia struggling and Enea Bastianini crashing out on Lap 21, all Martin had to do was maintain the lead over Acosta, who was closing in at one point. But Martin took control in the closing laps and crossed the finish line 1.404secs ahead.

This marks Martin’s first feature race win since the French GP nearly four months ago.

Bagnaia on podium; Marquez out

Bagnaia struggled on the opening lap and dropped to P6 after being passed by Marco Bezzecchi and Franco Morbidelli. He regained momentum as the race progressed, though, and battled back to third place.

Morbidelli finished fourth, ahead of Bezzecchi and Maverick Vinales. Fabio Quartararo beat Brad Binder to the line for seventh place, while Johann Zarco scored Honda’s best result this season with a P9 finish. Raul Fernandez rounded out the top 10. Marc Marquez’s title hopes took a big hit as he was forced to stop on Lap 12 with his bike on fire.

2024 MotoGP championship standings

Thanks to his Indonesian GP win, Martin has restored his championship lead to 21 points from Bagnaia. Bastianini is third overall, 54 points behind his Ducati teammate.
