Karthik Tharani dominates at Polo Cup season finale

Race 1 of the final round of the 2014 Volkswagen Polo R Cup India started off with a big incident on the first lap when Anshul Shah ran off the track, lost grip, hit Lee Keshav’s car and toppled, post which the safety car was deployed.

It allowed pole-sitter Karthik Tharani to keep his lead safe for the following three laps and with the race curtailed to a three-lap sprint thereafter, the Chennai lad managed to hold on to his lead despite a charge from second-placed Anindith Reddy. German guest driver Andre Gies, who competes in the VW Scirocco Cup, finished third.

Race two was a rolling start given wet conditions and low visibility and guest driver and reigning karting champion Ameya Bafna lead from the front having started third on the grid. Karthik Tharani managed to start eighth and still finish second while Angad Singh Matharoo rounded off the podium places.

Championship leader Karminder Pal Singh still has a 33-point cushion over Tharani, with just one race to go on Sunday while top five are covered by 60 points.
