2024 Formula E Tokyo E-Prix podium

Maserati’s Max Guenther fended off Nissan driver Oliver Rowland to win the inaugural Tokyo E-Prix. This means that five different drivers (all from different teams) have won the first five races of the 2024 Formula E season.

Reigning world champion Jake Dennis completed the podium in third place.

  1. Guenther wins, 0.755sec ahead of Rowland
  2. Wehrlein takes championship lead

Guenther defeats Rowland in Japan

Nissan looked strong on home soil and Rowland led most of the Tokyo E-Prix. But Guenther closely followed him and took advantage of Rowland lifting off to save energy, taking the lead with 10 laps to go. Rowland launched an attack on the final lap, but he was unable to make a move stick.

Guenther fended off three attempts on the last lap to seal Maserati’s first Formula E win since the 2023 Jakarta E-Prix. “There was a lot of energy management in the race, but we covered ourselves well, perfectly executed the strategy, and the moves, and did everything we had to do. It’s amazing to win Formula E’s first-ever race in Tokyo, and I’m proud,” said Guenther.

Over in the other Maserati car, Jehan Daruvala could only salvage an 17th place finish after picking up front wing damage early on. Dennis defeated Porsche’s Antonio Felix da Costa to finish third. Meanwhile, Pascal Wehrlein’s fifth place finish was enough for him to take the championship lead.

Mahindra driver Mortara disqualified

Edoardo Mortara crossed the chequered flag in sixth place to score Mahindra Racing’s first points this season. However, he was disqualified after stewards found that “the total energy used was over the maximum of 32kWh”.

This promoted Andretti’s Norman Nato to sixth place, followed by Nico Mueller, Nick Cassidy, Robin Frijns and Sergio Sette Camara.

2024 Formula E championship standings

Wehrlein leads the standings, but Cassidy is just two points behind him. Rowland is third overall, nine points off the lead.

Formula E will now head to Misano for another double-header on April 13 and 14.
