Formula E Pit Boost in action

Pit stops are returning to Formula E after seven years. However, rather than a battery change, the new ‘Pit Boost’ will require drivers to make a mandatory pit stop for a 10 percent battery recharge. This new format will be introduced at the Jeddah E-Prix next month (February 14-15).

  2. Pit stop to take around 30 seconds

What is Pit Boost?

Pit Boost will require drivers to stop for a 10 percent battery recharge via a 600kW fast charger. Formula E says this would take approximately 30 seconds. To put this into perspective, the Mercedes-Benz EQS has one of the quickest fast charging capabilities in India, with a maximum charging rate of 200kW.

In earlier seasons, Formula E required mandatory car swaps since the batteries couldn’t run a full race distance. But while pit stops back then were due to technological limitations, they’re returning now to showcase the potential for fast charging.

Coupled with the existing Attack Mode (which gives drivers a brief power boost and unlocks all-wheel drive), the new Pit Boost will add yet another strategic element. Only one car per team can stop at a time, so teams will have to weigh the benefits of an energy boost against the risk of losing track position.

“After an extensive testing and simulation process, we’re pleased to finally present this game-changing technology to the world. It marks one of the most ambitious and impactful additions not just to our series but modern-day motorsport,” said Alberto Longo, co-founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E.

“Pit Boost will challenge teams and drivers alike to make high-stakes decisions under intense pressure. The potential for dramatic overtakes, unexpected twists and human ingenuity will elevate the excitement for our fans and showcase Formula E and the FIA’s relentless commitment to innovation. As a series born to enhance the technology transfer from the race track to the road, it marks a step change for consumer vehicles and the future potential of EV performance.”

Formula E Pit Boost to debut at Jeddah

After over two years of testing, the new concept will debut at the Jeddah E-Prix next month. Formula E says it will also be used during other double-header rounds, making Monaco, Tokyo, Shanghai, Berlin and London potential options.

Teams will be informed about the specifics of Pit Boost, including during which laps it is available, 21 days before each race. No more than two pit crew members will be allowed to work on the car during the Pit Boost. One additional pit crew member will be assigned specifically to stop and release the car.
