VW Polo Cup: Matharoo wins first race of 2014

The Chandigarh driver inherited the lead after race winner Karminder Singh was penalised 30 seconds for overtaking under yellow flags.

Angad Singh Matharoo from Chandigarh took the first win of the Volkswagen Polo Cup 2014 season at round one of the one-make championship held at the Kari Speedway in Coimbatore.

Matharoo had originally finished second on the road behind Karminder Singh, but the race winner was eventually penalised for having overtaken under yellow flags during an incident - handing the win to Matharoo.

Anshul Shah, who had finished third on the road was promoted to second place with Lee Keshav Gupta completing the podium.

Earlier in the action-packed race, poleman Karthik Tharani Singh colliding with Anshul on the opening lap. Shortly after, the race was red-flagged when Venkatesh Shreyas and Prabhanjan also collided towards the end of first lap.

Anshul managed to get back on the grid for the restart after repairs while there was too much damage on Karthik's car which prevented him from restarting.

Having started ninth, Matharoo was thrilled to inherit the victory and take the early lead in the championship. He commented, "It is not the best way to take the win but after a tough qualifying session I am very happy to win the race!"
