The next-gen Audi A5 Sportback has been spied for the first time on Indian soil. This yet-to-be-unveiled model is based on Audi’s next-gen A4 sedan which is slated to launch in India later this year.

The A5 Sportback is one of the derivatives based on the Audi A4 which also includes an A4 Avant, A5 coupe, the A5 Sportback (seen here) and a convertible. The new A5, like its predecessor, carries its notchback shape and slots between the A4 sedan and the larger A6 sedan in Audi’s global line-up.

The next-gen Audi A5 test mule is powered by a 2.0-litre diesel engine, shared with the new A4, indicating approximately a 190hp output.  As we had reported earlier, this new-gen engine will be assembled in India from next year.

Audi sells the sportier S5 Sportback in India currently, which is based on the outgoing A4 sedan. The spotting of this yet-to-be-unveiled model from Audi in India could just be a part of Audi’s parent company, VW Group’s, global road-testing program. The carmaker has earlier tested the previous-gen A5 Coupé in India as well and more recently, the high-performance SQ7 SUV was also seen being tested in India prior to its global unveil.

C-class dashboard looks classy yet modern. Entire cabin is brilliantly finished with superb attention to detail.

Merc front seats offer good deal of comfort.

Short rear squab means rear seat not most comfy.

Merc’s screen not well integrated with rest of dash.

Buttons in the C won’t look out of place in an S-class.

BMW cabin quality incrementally better than before, but no match for the Merc’s. Dash design is quite simple.

BMW front seats more scuplted and feel sportier.

You sit lower in the 3, but seat is more supportive.

The 320d gets rear parking sensors but no camera.

Sub-menus make BMW iDrive system easy to use.
